Please join faculty, staff, and students from the Graduate School of Library and Information Science at the University of Illinois for following events at ALA Midwinter 2013. YALSA Trends in YA Presentation Saturday, January 26, 4:30 - 5:30 p.m. Washington State Convention Center, Room 213 http://alamw13.ala.org/node/8820 Carol Tilley, GSLIS assistant professor, will present the paper "Comics: A Once-Missed Opportunity<http://www.lis.illinois.edu/articles/2012/07/tilley-give-yalsa-past-presidents%E2%80%99-paper-presentation>," which traces the readership, publication, collection, and promotion of comics in the United States from the mid-twentieth century to the present day. Beyond delineating the important historical trajectory of young people's comics reading, this paper will also encourage today's youth services librarians and scholars to consider how we might apply the important insights about key areas such as information seeking, civic engagement, and pleasure reading to be gained from studying comics readership to enhancing the services and resources we provide young people in public and school libraries. Downs Intellectual Freedom Award and Alumni Reception Saturday, January 26, 5:30 - 7:00 p.m. Renaissance Seattle Hotel, Visions Room http://alamw13.ala.org/node/8764 This year's recipient of the Robert B. Downs Intellectual Freedom Award is Librotraficante<http://www.lis.illinois.edu/articles/2013/01/librotraficante-receives-2012-downs-intellectual-freedom-award>, a movement led by Tony Diaz opposing the elimination of Tucson's popular Mexican American Studies (MAS) program from the public school system and the removal of dozens of MAS textbooks and reading list books. Librotraficante's efforts have included the development of a magazine, the collection of books for underground libraries, and multiple events to raise awareness of the situation. The Downs Award is given annually by GSLIS faculty to acknowledge individuals or groups who have furthered the cause of intellectual freedom, particularly as it affects libraries and information centers and the dissemination of ideas. The award honors Robert Downs, a champion of intellectual freedom, on his twenty-fifth anniversary as director of the School. The Downs reception is co-sponsored by GSLIS and ABC-CLIO, a publisher of reference, contemporary thought, and professional development resources. -- Cindy Ashwill Assistant Dean for Communications Managing Editor, Library Trends and GSLIS Occasional Papers Graduate School of Library and Information Science University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign 325 Urban Outfitters Building (UOB), 507 E.
