Assistant Professor Library & Information Science, Full-time, Tenure Track

Position Summary: 

The University of Denver’s Morgridge College of Education (MCE) invites applications a nine-month, tenure-track faculty appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor in the Library & Information Science Program (LIS). The appointment will begin September 1, 2013.  We seek a candidate with a forward thinking and articulated research agenda and who will be comfortable with collaboration in research and teaching projects with other faculty members in the LIS program and MCE.  The successful candidate will play a strong role in teaching, research and service. We will consider applicants with expertise in a library or archive context with one or more of the defined areas: information systems, leadership and management, early childhood/youth literacy, STEM environments, medical informatics, or other related areas.  Assistant Professors serve as academic advisers to assigned LIS students. All members of the LIS MCE faculty participate in program and college committees and professional service as appropriate. There is an expectation for pursuing grants and other external funding opportunities.

 Required Qualifications:

• Candidates should have an earned doctorate by time of hire in library and information science or related area and a demonstrated potential for productive scholarship and teaching.

Preferred Qualifications:

• The ideal candidate will have education and experience in libraries, archives, information science, or related area.
• Experience in information system design and development; experience in design and delivery of graduate level courses in the LIS or related disciplines; ability to teach in the LIS core.
• Experience in acquiring and managing grants and evidence that the candidate values diversity.

The MCE is located in the new Katherine A. Ruffatto Hall, a 65,000 square foot complex providing a flexible, innovative, and multidisciplinary learning environment. The facility allows for ongoing dialogue with community, national, and global partners as we enter a transformational era in education. The facility features state-of-the-art technology including interactive white boards and flat-panel displays throughout, two TelePresence videoconferencing systems, and a Voice-over Internet Protocol (VOIP) integrated communications system. 

The Master’s of Library and Information Science (MLIS) degree at the University of Denver (DU) is the only ALA-accredited degree granted by a Colorado university. The program is especially well-served by the generous contributions of time and effort of an extensive alumni base and LIS professionals in a region known for vibrant and innovative practice, and the strong support of the Morgridge College of Education and DU Penrose Library.

Currently, the program has 100-125 students enrolled. Specialization areas supported by the program include digital librarianship, archives, early childhood librarianship, law librarianship, special librarianship, school libraries, and reference and user services. The LIS program is in the Research Methods and Information Science Department in the Morgridge College of Education (MCE) which currently enrolls about 850 students in its 24 degree (MA/MLIS, EdD, and PhD), licensure, and certificate programs.
