Using iPads in Mixed Methods Research: Experiences from the Translating Emergency Knowledge for Kids (TREKK) Project
Evidence shows that up to 40% of children treated in general hospital emergency departments (EDs) do not receive treatments for which clear evidence exists. Up to 20% of these children receive a treatment that has been shown to provide no benefit or even causes harm. The Translating Emergency Knowledge for Kids (TREKK) project is aimed at ensuring the latest research in pediatric emergency medicine is applied in general EDs. In the first phase of TREKK, the research team has partnered with 35 general EDs across Canada to determine the information needs and preferences of healthcare providers and families seeking care. This presentation will explore the design and implementation of a custom-designed iPad ‘app’ to survey healthcare professionals and parents seeking care for their children. Plans for qualitative data collection (including use of the iPad’s camera, notes and voice memo features) will be discussed. Key issues in conducting research with iPads in hospital settings (e.g., research ethics; researcher training) will also be explored.
