                      August 27-31, 2013

The Hamilton Mathematics Institute, Trinity College Dublin

                            on

      Geometry and Groups after Thurston

Sponsors: Boston College, the GEAR Network, the Hamilton Mathematics Institute, and the National Science Foundation.

Organizing Committee: Javier Aramayona (NUI, Galway), Tom Brady (DCU), Martin Bridgeman (Boston College), Martin Bridson (Oxford University),  Vladimir Dotsenko, (Trinity College Dublin), Brendan Guilfoyle, (Tralee institute of Technology), Tao Li, (Boston College), G. Robert Meyerhoff (Boston College).

This is the first announcement for the 9th William Rowan Hamilton Geometry and Topology Workshop to be held a the Hamilton Mathematics Institute (HMI), in Trinity College Dublin Ireland. The workshop will consist of a  two day mini-course August 27-28, followed by a three day lecture series, August 29-31, 2013.

This year's topic for the workshop is Geometry and Groups after Thurston.

This past year has seen the passing of William P. Thurston (1946-2012) whose work and conjectural program influenced much of the research in the fields of low-dimensional geometry and topology and geometric group theory. Also recent progress has seen most of Thurston's conjectural program now solved. This year's workshop aims to consider new directions of research and new problems which will direct future research in the spirit of Thurston's original program.

Funding and Sponsors:

The workshop is co-sponsored by Boston College, the GEAR Network, the HMI and the NSF. Funding is available for graduate students and junior researchers wishing to attend the mini-course and workshop. A limited amount of funding is also available for both junior and senior researchers wishing to attend the workshop. If you would like to request travel support you can do so on the workshop website at

http://www.hamilton.tcd.ie/events/gt/gt2013/register.htm

Minicourse:

This years minicourse will be given by Ken Bromberg (Utah) on Groups action on Quasi-Trees.

The minicourse will run August 27-28 and consist of a two-day series of lectures and discussions. The target audience is graduate students and junior researchers.

Lecture Series:

The lecture series will be August 29-31 and consist of a series of 45 minute talks. There will also be scheduled

discussion and problem sessions.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- This message was sent to you via the Geometry List, which announces conferences in geometry and closely related areas to over 1200 mathematicians worldwide.

At http://listserv.utk.edu/archives/geometry.html there are many functions available, including checking the archives since November 2005, changing your e-mail address or preferences, and joining/leaving the list. If you have problems that cannot be resolved at this website, send a message to [log in to unmask]

Before sending an announcement, please carefully read the following. Any announcements that are *not* about conferences (e.g. those about jobs, journals, books, etc.) will be rejected by the moderator without comment. To announce a geometry or closely related conference, send the announcement (including a conference web site if possible) to [log in to unmask] The moderator cannot edit your message; list members will receive the announcement as an e-mail from you EXACTLY as you submitted it. For example, if your submission starts with "Please post this on the geometry list" then your conference announcement will also begin with that statement. In order to keep down the volume of e-mail, only TWO announcements per conference will be approved by the moderator. The "subject" of your message should include the name of the conference and the number (first or second) of the announcement, e.g. Gauss Memorial Lectures in Geometry: Second Announcement. Please check that your announcement (especially the website) is correct. Corrections will be approved only in the most critical situations, e.g. if corrected information is not available on the website. If you send a submission from an e-mail address that is not subscribed to the geometry list then you will be sent an e-mail asking for confirmation. This feature is designed to thwart the hundreds of machine-generated spam that are sent to the list and would otherwise have to be manually blocked by the moderator.

The Geometry List is sponsored and maintained by the Mathematics Department, The University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
