[Dr. Joseph Majdalani] Dr. Joseph Majdalani, at right, receives the Abe M. Zarem Educator Award from Paul D. Nielson Dr. Joseph Majdalani earns Educator Award for work with grad students University of Tennessee Space Institute (UTSI)<http://www.utsi.edu/> professor Joseph Majdalani was honored with the Abe M. Zarem Educator Award at the 51st Aerospace Sciences Meeting in Grapevine, Texas, on Tuesday, Jan 8, 2013. The award was presented by Paul D. Nielson, former President of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA). The Zarem Educator Award is given by the AIAA Foundation to faculty members who showcase a visible degree of effectiveness in their mentorship and guidance efforts toward advising graduate students. Majdalani, the Arnold Chair of Excellence in Advanced Propulsion at UTSI, has advised five graduate students in the past three years whose five papers won six best-paper awards. The papers focus on advanced propulsion concepts that pertain to chemical rockets in which the flow is driven by either wall-normal or wall-tangential injection. They are sponsored by the National Science Foundation and by the UT Space Institute. Five of the awards came from the sixty-first and sixty-third Southeastern Student Conferences in 2010, 2011, and 2012. Student Charles Haddad (see below) earned the sixth award at this month's Aerospace Sciences Meeting. STUDENT NEWS Charles Haddad recognized for his astronautics research University of Tennessee Space Institute (UTSI)<http://www.utsi.edu/> graduate Charles T. Haddad received the Abe M. Zarem Award for Distinguished Achievement in Astronautics at the 51st Aerospace Sciences Meeting in Grapevine, Texas, on Tuesday, Jan 8, 2013. The award was presented by Paul D. Nielson, former President of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA). The Zarem Award in the field of astronautics is selected from the collection of graduate student papers originating from seven AIAA regions. The panel of judges complimented Haddad on the "outstanding quality" of his paper, titled "On the Sidewall Boundary Layer of Transverse Waves in Simulated Liquid Rocket Engines." The paper was coauthored by Dr. Joseph Majdalani. Haddad's work was partly funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and is part of his MS thesis in aerospace engineering. Nielson EVENTS Joshua Sangoro to speak at MSE seminar Joshua Sangoro, of Oak Ridge National Laboratories (ORNL) Chemical Sciences Division, will speak on "Ionic Conductivity and Structural Dynamics in Ionic Liquids" 12:40-1:55 p.m. Tuesday, January 29, in Room 612 of the Dougherty Engineering Building. Ionic liquids are promising materials for the development of safe electrolytes in modern electrochemical energy devices such as batteries, super-capacitors, fuel cells, and dye-sensitized solar cells. Sangoro will discuss new insights obtained from studies into the dominant mechanisms of ionic conductivity and structural dynamics in these liquids. Electron Microscopy Center hosts open house to show off new microscopes Two electron microscopes recently purchased by the University of Tennessee are among the most advanced in the world. First-Year Studies seeks students to be peer mentors First-Year Studies is looking for peer mentors to assist faculty and staff with FYS 101 next fall. As a peer mentor, students will have the opportunity to earn credit hours while gaining valuable leadership experience. Eligible students must complete twelve hours of coursework at UT by spring semester's end; have and maintain a cumulative 2.5 GPA; and have a clear judicial record (Office of Judicial Affairs). Fulbright Scholar information sessions and guest speaker Dr. Janet Haner, Faculty Fulbright Advisor at Pennsylvania State University, will lead two Fulbright Information Sessions on the UT campus. For more information >><https://rdav.nics.tennessee.edu/2013/01/rdav-internships-for-undergraduates-summer-2013/> Cybersecurity research experience offered for undergraduates in science and engineering The Clark School of Engineering at the University of Maryland in College Park is seeking applications for scholars to become integral members of team-based research projects in cybersecurity coordinated by faculty in the Maryland Cybersecurity Center (MC2). Students majoring in engineering, computer science, math, and physical science are strongly encouraged to apply for this summer 2013 program. The application deadline is February 15, 2013. Teams will conduct research from June 3 through August 2, 2013. The program offers multiple tiers of mentorship and training in team skills and project organization, as well as addressing issues of concern to women and minorities in science and engineering. Each scholar receives a $4,500 stipend, $300 food allowance, and housing. Funding is available for transportation. This program is funded by the National Science Foundation and the Clark School of Engineering. The program offers students the opportunity to participate in research for ten full weeks during the summer at ORNL, where scientific mentors will select projects for individual students based on their interests and degree fields. The program is open to any eligible student studying a science, technology, engineering, or math discipline with an interest in the automotive industry. College of Engineering seeks 2013-2014 Ambassadors The College of Engineering is now accepting applications for the 2013-2014 class of College of Engineering Ambassadors. Founded in 2004, the Ambassadors are the undergraduate arm of recruitment for the college. The purpose of the Ambassadors is to recruit prospective students to the College of Engineering, involve the college's student body in its goals, and stimulate community interest in the field of engineering. "During my rotation this fall, I worked in the Olefins and Infrastructure group," explained Brown." My specific title was CPLA contact engineer. CPLA, a small unit in Olefins, stands for cyclics purification Louisiana. "As a contact engineer, CPLA was my unit. Each morning I went to the control center to monitor my unit to make sure it is on spec and that no problems are occurring or about to occur. Directly after monitoring, I attended the morning meeting with all the full time contacts as well as various other employees where we held a teleconference with a sister control center across the plant. "During these meetings I would provide updates on my unit as necessary as well as get brought up to speed on all the other things taking place in the adjacent units that may affect me. Additionally, I had to prepare and present monthly monitoring packages. The purpose of these packages is to detect and discuss any long term problems as well as their perspective solutions." Brown had other different sets of duties while in Texas. "Apart from my baseline responsibilities, I worked on various side projects, one of which involved an extensive study of a particular hydrocarbon carrying pipe," said Brown. "This pipe was experiencing an abnormal hydraulic limit. My job was to gather pressure data at various points along its 1.7-mile route as well as create a rigorous Pegasys model to compare my findings to." Brown found that the experience of working in the petrochemical industry was a valuable asset to take away from his co-op rotation. "Before setting foot inside the ExxonMobil complex, I honestly had no clue as to all the complexity of the petrochemical business," he said. "My assignment was very comprehensive and gave me a great view of what a full-time hire does on a daily basis at ExxonMobil."
