5. 2013 Public Service Award Nominations

Each year the University of Tennessee Alumni Association provides funds for an Alumni Public Service Award of $2,000 to the Knoxville campus. The purpose of the award is to recognize individuals for outstanding achievement in public service and through this recognition, to stimulate the growth and development of the University’s public service role. All full-time faculty and exempt staff of the University are eligible except previous winners and those who primary job responsibilities are in public service.

Deadline: Monday, February 25, 2013

Details: Please see attached

6. Call for Papers: Frontiers of Informed Consent

Informed, autonomous consent is widely considered to be central to the ethics of human subjects research. However, it remains both conceptually and practically underspecified. A conceptually clear account of informed consent that is appropriate to the broad array of human subjects research, from medical to social science, has been elusive. Moreover, it has proven to be difficult to operationalize informed consent in practice. These challenges to the ethics of informed consent have been compounded by the globalization of research and rapid technological developments. This interdisciplinary workshop will bring together practitioners and theorists at the leading edge of the ethics of informed consent to share their research and discuss the future of informed consent. The workshop is designed to be highly interactive, and to provide speakers with constructive feedback from colleagues working on related issues.

Deadline: May 1, 2013

Details: http://www.northeastern.edu/ethics/workshop/call-for-papers/

12. EEE Week: Nancy Franz on Public Value Story Telling

(Hat-Tip ESC Linked-in Group<http://www.linkedin.com/groups?home=&gid=4108101&trk=anet_ug_hm&goback=.gmr_4108101>) Organizational sustainability for many relies more and more on translating the value of what they do for a wider audience. This article, by Iowa State’s Nancy Franz, has an especially good set of “lessons learned” that are broadly applicable to any one hoping to engage in sustainable, community-based work.

13. In Troubled Times, a Democratic Revival

(Huffington Post, 1/23/2013) " The Dream Freedom Revival and Imagining America represent a renewed commitment to one of higher education's most important and yet recently neglected roles in our society: to function as a civic as well as economic engine, a force for bringing people from all walks of life together in collaborative work. To address serious economic challenges in a new global economy, Imagining America believes we need to leaven technical expertise with a spirit that awakens people's sense of themselves as civic actors -- a spirit that respects and taps the expertise and knowledge of everyone, whether they have a college degree or not. "

14. Big Question for Community-Engaged Research: Who Owns the Data??

(Unite for Sight - hat-tip #CCPH) “In addition to providing the community with important results, it is also essential that data be submitted since those who participate in research often face risks and give up precious time; therefore, they are entitled to the results. “No group should be deprived of its fair share of the benefits of research, short-term or long-term; such benefits include the direct benefits of participation as well as the benefits of the new knowledge that the research is designed to yield.”
