TOP ENGAGEMENT NEWS:

1. From Ivory Tower to Public Square: Democracy and the Engaged University

"Rather than seeing ourselves as bastions of knowledge, separated and insulated from the hurly burly of civil society, we must embrace the challenge of becoming centres of knowledge exchange with mandates to share ideas and build capacity not just within our university cloisters, but throughout the broader communities we serve. As importantly, such knowledge exchange must be reciprocal: enabling us to better understand the needs and wants of these communities - and learn from their experiences, knowledge and insights." - Andrew Petter, President and Vice-Chancellor, Simon Fraser Universities

Presentation to the Sixth Annual World Universities Forum, January 10, 2013

5. Call for Proposals: The Engaged Campus: Driving Innovation through Partnerships

This inaugural conference shall convene in 2013 in one of the nation’s most historical hotbeds of innovation - Dearborn, Michigan, May 19-21, 2013 Speakers and presenters will highlight campus-wide, comprehensive partnerships that are changing the culture of their campus through innovation. Further, the conference planning committee is encouraging wide attendance by higher education, community partners and others interested in innovative practice for deeper learning and community impact.

Details: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/InnovationConf

6. Call for Proposals: Building a Democratic City. 2nd International Conference on Participatory Budgeting in the US & Canada

In cities across North America, budget crises are leading to painful cuts in public services and infrastructure - especially for communities with the greatest needs. Community members are usually left on the sidelines during public budgeting, with little power to shape the spending decisions that affect their lives. Participatory Budgeting (PB) offers an alternative - a more democratic and accountable way to manage public money. First used in Brazil in 1989, there are now over 1,500 participatory budgets around the world. Most are for city budgets, but counties, states, towns, housing authorities, schools, universities, and other institutions have also used PB to give people real power over real money.

Deadline: February 15, 2013

7. Call for papers: Participatory Science: understanding what motivates and sustains participation in science

Citizen science has gained recognition as a new frontier for knowledge creation and geographic understanding. It can be defined as the participation of non-professional scientists in scientific knowledge production, and can be seen as part of both a long tradition of amateur, volunteer and enthusiast participation in science and a wider phenomenon of new participative forms of knowledge creation facilitated by information and communication technology, as well as societal changes. This session seeks to explore current research, practice, motivations, materials and meanings of participating in science. By adopting a broad understanding of ‘science’ as any instances where the public might contribute to research. Conference: London, 28-30 August 28-30, 2013.

Deadline: February 5, 2013

8. Call for Manuscript Proposals: Special Issue of Feminist Teacher (Spring 2014) on "Feminist Campus-‐Community Partnerships: Intersections and Interruptions"

Within community-based academic projects, feminist research and solidarity-building stances are foundational, yet often overlooked in programmatic and research design. This special issue wants to examine this tension the hope of sharing tactics and strategies that can open up new possibilities for students, faculty, administrators and community partners, and seeks contributions that provide project-‐specific attempts to connect with-or interrupt-community engagement work as a way to generate meaning in the lives of students, faculty, administrators and community partners.

Deadline (500 word proposals): February 15, 2013

11. We’re From the Government and We’re Here to Help

“We are the experts and it's our job to find a solution to this problem. When we’ve worked it out we’ll take the answer to our communities, make sure they understand it so they’ll buy in.” Is this an outdated model? Read an argument advocating for a more collaborative approach to decision making and engagement to be taken - especially on projects that are socially complex.

12. Speaking Truth, Creating Power: A Guide to Policy Work for Community-Based Participatory Research Practitioners

(hat-tip CCPH) This tool-kit is based, in part, on work conducted at the Harlem Urban Research Center (URC), one of three Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) funded community-based participatory research (CBPR) centers. The URC in Harlem is guided by a community action board (CAB) comprised of researchers, city and state government representatives, local service providers, and community activists. The URC focuses its research on the social determinants of health and health disparities.

15. Online Curriculum: Determining if Community-Based Participatory Research is Right for You

(University of Washington) CBPR has gained recognition as a viable approach to research. Increasingly, funding agencies (NIH & CDC, among others) are requesting that communities be research partners in grant proposals. However, CBPR is not for every investigator, community, or research question. When exploring the possibility of engaging in a CBPR partnership, it is advised that all parties consider asking themselves these questions about the feasibility of working together.
