1.      Call for UT Submissions: National W.K. Kellogg/C.Peter Magrath Award

UTK Nominations are now being accepted for the 2013 Outreach Scholarship W.K. Kellogg Foundation Engagement Award. One of these projects will be selected to be submitted by the University for the regional Outreach Scholarship W.K. Kellogg Foundation Engagement Award; the winners of the five regional awards are celebrated at two national conferences and also become finalists for the national C. Peter Magrath University Community Engagement Award.  Winning nominee will be provided support through UTK’s Office of Research to complete and submit a final application for the award.

2.      2013 Ernest A. Lynton Award for the Scholarship of Engagement for Early Career Faculty

This award, presented by The New England Resource Center for Higher Education (NERCHE), recognizes a pre-tenure or early-career contract faculty member who connects his or her teaching, research, and service to community engagement. The award will be presented at the 19th Annual Conference of the Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities (CUMU), “Transforming and Sustaining Communities through Partnerships,” to be held Oct. 26-29, 2013, at the University of Louisville in Louisville, Kentucky.  The recipient will then have several opportunities to disseminate his or her work, including presenting at both the CUMU conference and NERCHE’s annual Lynton Colloquium, publishing in the Metropolitan Universities Journal, and participating in one or more NERCHE webinars focused on community-based scholarly work.

The Journal of Community Engagement and Scholarship (JCES) seeks manuscripts related to the NOSC 2012 general theme PARTNER. INSPIRE. CHANGE. and any of these three tracks: Voice of the Student/Young Scholar, Voice of the Community-Partner Scholar, and Voice of the Senior Engaged Scholar.  Note: If you presented a poster or paper at NOSC last fall, this call is especially for you!

5.      Call for Manuscripts - Journal of Public Scholarship in Higher Education (JPSHE)

JPSHE showcases the new disciplinary knowledge and pedagogical practice generated when faculty engage with communities. In doing so, the journal promotes community engaged teaching, research, and service as forms of public scholarship. A national and international refereed academic journal, JPSHE’s primary authors and audiences are faculty, staff, and administrative leadership in higher education. JPSHE aims to stimulate dialogue about the ways that community engagement affects the nature and scope of faculty work and, in doing so, transforms our disciplines and institutions.

6.      Call for Papers: Teaching Democratic Thinking for special 2014 issue of Partnerships: A Journal of Service-Learning and Civic Engagement

Partnerships is a multi-disciplinary, open access, peer-reviewed journal, exploring “effective partnerships between students, faculty, community agencies, administrators, disciplines” in higher education.  This special issue will further expand the discussion of “democratic thinking”: what it looks like, if it is a goal higher educators should have, how one acquires it, and how/if it can be taught.

7.      Call for Applications: 2013 Community-Campus Partnerships for Health (CCPH) Award

This Award recognizes exemplary partnerships between communities and academic institutions that are striving to achieve the systems and policy changes needed to overcome the root causes of health, social, environmental and economic inequalities. CCPH promotes health equity and social justice through partnerships between communities and academic institutions, and views health broadly as physical, mental, emotional, social and spiritual well-being and emphasize partnership approaches to health that focus on changing the conditions and environments in which people live, work and play.

8.      Call for Papers: Special Issue of Journal of Community Practice

Guest editors for a special issue of the Journal related to the theme “Interdisciplinary Scholarship for Community Practice” are particularly interested in papers that focus on the implications of emerging demographic trends and social conditions, the emergent research methods, and the use of innovative methods, such as the arts or information technology, in community practice. As an interdisciplinary journal grounded in social work, the editors encourage papers that demonstrate interdisciplinary collaboration and community-based scholarship.

9.      Call for Papers: First International Conference on Public Policy

Over the past thirty years, public policy research has grown as an academic field of study in many countries. Coming from a range of disciplines in the social sciences and humanities, including political science, public administration, geography, sociology, economics and law among others, this research has helped develop our understanding of the many phenomena related to public policy-making by governments. The first International Conference on Public Policy (ICPP) hopes to join together all of the researchers who work on public policy and their different approaches and topics in Grenoble, June 26-28. 2013.

10.  Robert Wood Johnson Foundation: Games to Generate Data Challenge
Awards of $100,000, $50,000, and $25,000 will be presented for gaming and gamification concepts to generate health data that can be incorporated into the Aligning Forces data set. Gamification has been an increasingly hot topic in the health space, but seldom have games been used for the express purpose of creating data to improve the health and the quality of care in a community (big or small).

11.  U.S. Institute for Peace: Public Education for Peacebuilding Support Application

Up to 250 institutions will receive up to $2,000 in matching support for their public education activities through two cycles over the period of November 2012-December 2013. Watch website for full application will is to be available in spring 2013.

12.  Wellcome Fund Accepting Applications for Collaborative Research Travel Grants

To capitalize on what appears to be an opportunity to provide relatively unrestricted travel funds to academic scientists and trainees and to provide a stimulus for those working or contemplating working at the interface of science, this program provides travel grants that can be used both internationally and domestically to acquire new research techniques, and to promote collaborations.  Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in mathematics, physics, chemistry, computer science, statistics, or engineering and are interested in investigating research opportunities in the biological sciences.  Biologists interested in working with physical scientists to answer biological questions may also apply.

13.  Google Grants: Computer Science for High School (CS4HS) Workshops

Grants of up to $15,000  for universities to develop 2-3 day workshops for local high school and middle school CS teachers. Workshops should  incorporate informational talks by industry leaders, and discussions on new and emerging CS curricula at the high school and middle school level. Deadline: February 16, 2013

18.  The Shifting Meaning Of 'Minority' In America

(NPR) "This month, the Census Bureau released new data showing that white people will make up less than half the U.S. population just 30 years from now. According to census projections, non-Hispanic whites will still be the largest group by 2043, but people of color will collectively outnumber them. New York Times columnist Charles Blow writes that this browning of America has already happened in many cities. And he raises questions about how this demographic shift will affect race relations and power dynamics in our society."
