Dr. Randy Borum comes to the University of South Florida’s
School of Information from the USF College of Behavioral and Community
Sciences, where he has been a faculty member with a joint appointment in the
College of Public Health since 1999. Prior to joining USF, Dr. Borum was an
Assistant Professor at Duke University’s School of Medicine. Trained as a social and behavioral scientist
with a doctorate in psychology, Dr. Borum was recruited to develop an
innovative new stream of information-based education and scholarship. He is coordinating an emerging graduate
program in the School of Information linking the use of strategy and
information analysis; the first known program of its kind. Dr. Borum envisioned a new synergy between
the ideals of information-related research/practice and the practical
challenges faced by private and public sector organizations that rely heavily
on information and intelligence for policy-related decision making.
Dr. Borum has been appointed by three Directors of National
Intelligence (DNIs) to the Intelligence Science Board (ISB). He served on the Defense Science Board Task
Force on Understanding Human Dynamics, and on the National Academy of Sciences'
Steering Committee for its Study on Sociocultural Data to Accomplish DoD
Missions. Having previously served as a
sworn police officer, Dr. Borum worked more than a decade as a Senior
Consultant to the U.S. Secret Service helping to develop, refine and study
behavior-based protocols for threat assessment and protective intelligence. He
was the Principal Investigator on the "Psychology of Terrorism"
initiative for an agency in the US Intelligence Community.
A highly respected and prolific scholar with a sustained
record of research accomplishments, Dr. Borum has authored/ co- authored more
than 140 professional publications.
He
currently serves as an advisor to the National Center for the Analysis of
Violent Crime (NCAVC), the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit-1 (National Security
and Threat Assessment) and the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center’s (FLETC)
Behavioral Science Division, and is listed on the United Nations' Roster of
Experts in Terrorism.
Dr. Borum is a Past-President of the American Academy
of Forensic Psychology, and currently serves as Senior Editor of the Journal of
Strategic Security.
