Dear Geographers:
Please consider enrolling in Dr. Carol Harden's GEOG 309 (Geography of Food) for Spring 2013. This is an innovative course that bridges the human and natural spheres of geographic study, allowing you to study the convergence of social forces and cultural tastes with environmental demands and resource implications. Plus, it is taught by a great instructor.
To give you an idea of the growing popularity of studying the geography of food, please see the announcement below regarding graduate opportunities on the subject.
Thanks,
Derek

Ph.D. and MA Studentships in Geography of Food at SDSU
The Department of Geography at San Diego State University is announcing studentships for one Ph.D. student and one MA student interested in the study of food, ethnicity and place. We are particularly interested in students who will engage with current debates in urban and cultural geography, are open to a variety of approaches (including ethnographic research, mapping and data visualization) and have an interest in working with children. The student will have the opportunity to participate in a large research project focusing on everyday food practices in immigrant/refugee neighborhoods in San Diego.
The Doctoral Program in Geography at SDSU (which is joint with UC Santa Barbara) is a highly ranked program with expertise in various sub-disciplinary areas including urban geography and children's geographies.
The studentship will provide tuition waivers and stipend for research assistantship for four years for the Ph.D. and for two years for the MA.
To apply for the studentship, apply to the MA (by December 15) or Ph.D. program (by February 1) through the regular procedure. In your statement of purpose, state your wish to apply for this studentship and explain your interests in the relationships between food, ethnicity and place.
Details on the Ph.D. program and application procedures can be found at: http://geography.sdsu.edu/Programs/phd.html
Details on the MA program and application procedures can be found at: http://geography.sdsu.edu/Programs/masters.html
