COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT & OUTREACH NEWS:

1. UT Students Present Community-Based Research to Federal Commission in D.C.

Late last month, UT students presented research on rural solar policies before the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) in Washington, DC. Dr. Tim Ezzell's Sustainable Communities class (Political Science), using Cocke County, TN as a case study, found that rural residents were enthusiastic about solar energy but lacked information about system costs and requirements. The students also identified numerous opportunities for solar development in the community, including solar lease programs for public buildings and low-income housing; solar powered tourism facilities; and the use of modular data centers to develop a regional data farm. The class project was sponsored by the ARC as part of the Appalachian Teaching Project. UT helped establish the ATP in 2000, and has participated every year since its inception.

2. UT Research Webinar: Strategies for Economic Improvement in Appalachia's Distressed Rural Counties

The Appalachian Resource Commission (ARC) has posted a recording of webinar conducted by Tim Ezzell, UT Research Scientist, that reviews an ARC-sponsored, community-engaged research study conducted by UT faculty and staff that examines the challenges to economic and community development efforts in rural Appalachian communities and the ways in which local governments, agencies, and community organizations are responding. The ARC has designated Dr. Ezzell as an Appalachian Teaching Fellow and an honorary Appalachian Research Fellow for his contributions to the region.

3. Family Engineering Night at Sequoyah School

Neighbors peeking out their windows towards nearby Sequoyah School probably did a double-take at the hundreds of students shuffling in and out with bright yellow hard hats on. The hats can be explained, on this particular occasion, at least: the kids at the local K-5 school were channeling their inner-engineer. After all, it was CURENT's Family Engineering Night.

6. "Becoming The Messenger" Workshop - Great Fun: Can We Do It Again?

TN-SCORE and the UTK's Office of Research co-hosted a highly-productive National Science Foundation workshop titled "Becoming the Messenger." Award winning journalists Dan Agan and Chris Mooney along with Emmy award winning producer Joe Schreiber led researchers, public information officers, and STEM outreach professionals from across Tennessee in ways to become a more efficient communicator. "This pointed out how all scientists can enhance our ability to communicate our passion for advancing knowledge and use this to better our world," said Lou Gross, Distinguished Professor at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and Director of the National Institute for Mathematical & Biological Synthesis. "I will use the advice the workshop provided to enliven my own presentations as well as encourage my students and colleagues to focus on this aspect of our professional lives."

33. New Tenure and Promotion Resource for Community-Engaged Anthropology

(Engagement Scholarship Consortium) The number of people graduating with doctoral, masters, and bachelor degrees in anthropology has continued to expand and flourish. Concomitantly, preparation for careers in the discipline has become much more complex. Increasingly anthropology programs, especially those with an explicit focus on applied and practice, are hiring faculty members who can contribute to both research and teaching agendas that involve students in community-based projects whether domestic or international. The new AAA Resource Panel consists of 35 anthropologists from academia and practice who have substantial experience, commitment, and expertise to evaluate work in specific areas of research within applied and practicing anthropology.

36. Community-Engaged Pedagogy: A Strengths-Based Approach to Involving

Diverse Stakeholders in Research Partnerships

To help build community capacity to partner in translational research partnerships, new approaches to training that incorporate both adult learning models and community-based participatory research (CBPR) are needed. This article describes the educational approach-"community-engaged pedagogy"-used in a capacity-building training program with community partners in Boston. This approach developed iteratively over the course of the first year of the program. Using a community-engaged pedagogical approach helps to model respect, reciprocity, and power sharing, core principles of CBPR. Although community partners appreciate this approach, traditionally trained academics may find this method unfamiliar and uncomfortable.

37. 7 Ways to Create Lasting Engagement: a Snapshot From Detroit

(Knight Foundation) Once a year, residents of Detroit's Midtown neighborhood gather for the Marche du Nain Rouge, a mini-Mardi Gras where residents can put on costumes and send the "red dwarf of Detroit" - said to have cursed the city for centuries - back from whence he came. No chamber of commerce dreamed up the event that helps strengthen the neighborhood. It bubbled up from the people, and serves as a reminder that while the goals of community engagement may be high-minded and serious, the road there may be motivated by, joyfulness and fun. This was one of the insights from the Detroit Civic Engagement Showcase & Learning Conference, a TED-style learning event organized by Knight Foundation and Philanthropy for Active Civic Engagement (PACE).

38. Community-based participatory research: guide to ethical principles & practice

(Durham University) A new report from the UK's National Co-Ordinating Centre for Public Engagement begins: "All research raises questions about ethics: about the rigour, responsibility and respect of the practices of researchers. As a result, there are strict systems in place to encourage and enforce ethical practice. However, some kinds of research create specific challenges, which may not be adequately addressed by institutional frameworks for ethical conduct in research. This is particularly the case with participatory research, where the boundaries between researchers and 'research subjects' begin to blur."
