Regional Assistant Librarian & Assistant Professor (Tenure Track)

The University of Illinois at Chicago Library seeks an innovative and service oriented Regional Assistant Librarian for the Library of the Health Sciences in Peoria, one of four sites of the Library of the Health Sciences. The UIC Library of the Health Sciences- Peoria (LHSP) supports the educational and research missions of the Colleges of Medicine and Nursing, the School of Public Health, eleven residencies and five fellowships, and community health professionals and consumers in Central Illinois. The Regional Assistant Librarian is primarily responsible for information and instructional services. This position assists the Regional Head Librarian in the operation and management of the library, provides leadership in developing programming and

curriculum, and is instrumental in leading new initiatives. LHSP provides a dynamic environment for innovation and has a history of early adoption of new services and technologies. LHSP is a leader in curriculum development, online instruction, EBM, and outreach. This is a tenure track faculty position with research and publication expectations.

 

Responsibilities: The Regional Assistant Librarian is responsible for all aspects of information services, including reference and research consultation (including chat and e-mail), online searching, curriculum-integrated instruction and other educational activities, and coordination of content development for the Library’s Web site. The incumbent also serves as a liaison to various professional colleges and residency and fellowship programs. Liaisons contribute to research services, collection development, scholarly communication activities, and faculty and student engagement. Other areas in which the incumbent will share responsibilities include evidence-based medicine, medical informatics, knowledge management, health information literacy, and outreach initiatives. The incumbent also leads local staff development activities and integration of new technologies. In addition, the incumbent participates in task forces and committees at the Library and University levels, and administers the Library in the absence of the Regional Head Librarian. The position reports to the Regional Head Librarian (Peoria).

 

Minimum Qualifications: Masters degree in Library Science from an American Library Association accredited program; two years of professional library experience; expertise with PubMed, CINAHL, and other electronic health information resources; reference service and instructional experience; strong user-focused public services orientation; excellent written communication and interpersonal skills; familiarity with computer applications and bibliographic management software; flexibility to work collaboratively in a team environment; evidence of good judgment and administrative skills; ability to travel; and evidence of ability to meet university standards in librarianship, research, and professional service commensurate with tenure.

 

Additional Desirable Qualifications: Experience working in an academic health sciences library; subject background in the health or life sciences; demonstrable expertise in teaching, instructional technologies, and course management systems (Blackboard); experience in initiating creative information services programs; experience with data management and preservation; comfort with mobile technologies and social media; enthusiasm for consumer health outreach and health literacy education; and success in grant writing.

 

The greater Peoria metropolitan area has a population of over 375,000. It lies at a crossroads between Chicago, St. Louis, and Indianapolis. Peoria is home to Caterpillar’s world headquarters, Bradley University, and a renowned medical community. Salary/Rank/Contract

Faculty status position. Salary and rank dependent upon qualifications and experience.

 

Faculty appointments in the UIC Library begin at $48,000; twelve month appointment with 24 days vacation; 12 annual sick leave with additional disability benefits; 11 paid holidays; paid medical insurance (contribution based on annual salary; coverage for dependents may be purchased); two dental plans available; life insurance paid for by the State; participation in one of the retirement options of the State Universities Retirement System compulsory (8% of salary is withheld and is tax exempt until withdrawal); no Social Security coverage but Medicare payment required; physical examination at University Health Service is required upon appointment.
