(CES4Health.info) This 30 minute
documentary mixes poetry with music, interviews, archival footage, and images of community, nature and dance to describe what cultural humility is and why it’s needed. Originally developed by physicians Melanie Tervalon and Jann Murray-García to address health
disparities and institutional inequities in medicine, cultural humility is now used in public health, social work, education, and non-profit management to analyze the root causes of suffering and create a broader, more inclusive view of the world.

of their students. Most colleges and universities now recognize the individual and institutional benefits of community service performed by their undergraduates, and many have already sought or are planning to seek the Carnegie Classification of an Engaged
Campus and/or recognition on the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Role. The NASCE offers schools the opportunity to measure, explore and understand the community service engaged in by their students.

Reading: "8 Years From Today: When the Uneducated Become the Unemployed"
(Huffington Post, Oct. 25)
“Right now, a student is quietly sitting in the back of his classroom struggling to read. He is not a disruption, but his ability to think critically, complete simple math equations and formulate sentences are well-below grade level. He is part of the 35 percent
of students who, according to a recent National Assessment of Education Progress, are not proficient in science. He attends school in one of the 94 percent of all U.S. school districts that have average math achievement below the 67th percentile relative to
their international competitors and even if he were to transfer to one of the country's 50 wealthiest school districts, it would ranked behind nearly half of its international competitors “

The First Steps to Meaningful Community Engagement
(Next American City, Oct. 31)
The question of how to meaningfully and authentically engage community members in planning and development efforts is both difficult and important. Achieving equitable neighborhood revitalization takes fusing the hopes, dreams, wisdom and creative problem-solving
of community members with the expertise, resources and knowledge of planners, community developers, artists, public officials, the private sector and others working to strengthen our communities.

Community engagement: Why bother?
(University Affairs, Oct. 30)
It can be challenging for people from academic institutions to engage with people from external communities. There are cultural distances to cross. For example, there are differences in: propensities for collaboration vs. competition; expectations around the
pace of work and timeframes for achievement of results; and tolerance for risk, uncertainty or error. In addition, activities such as collaborating with external partners and facilitating students’ work in community settings take time and require skills that
are different from those needed for traditional academic roles. So why bother? Here are four very good reasons.
