Dr. Frank Loeffler looks at role of microorganisms in climate change

Dr. Frank Loeffler, Governor’s Chair professor in the Departments of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Microbiology, recently led a research team studying the role of microorganisms in climate change. The team discovered that the gene controlling a biochemical process that reduces emission of an important greenhouse gas is present in many more species of microorganisms than previously thought.

The study was published this week in the early online edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The research was conducted in collaboration with Dr. Robert Sanford of the University of Illinois and other colleagues at Georgia Tech, the US Department of Agriculture, the University of Puerto Rico, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, Oak Ridge National Lab, and the University of Tennessee.

Featured co-op student: Matthew Lambert

Matthew LambertOur student this week is Matthew Lambert, pictured at right, an electrical engineering major who accepted a co-op at BSH Home Appliances located in Jacksboro, Tennessee.

"I worked in the Design Engineering Department, which in this company consist of about ten engineers, two lab technicians, and two other co-ops," said Lambert. "For this semester, I was told to learn the lab. I focused on learning lab test and the lab equipment. The first couple of weeks I devoted myself to learning the product. After this I assisted the other co-ops with their tasks (they were returning co-ops) for another week. Around the fourth week, I started receiving my own task. I took over testing of the oven doors to reduce temps. I also learned some of the aspects of 3D Design in UniGraphics."

Matthew overcame a particular challenge during his co-op assignment involving some misbehaving equipment.

"I was tasked with solving a problem of a temp sensor reacting to the heat wrong," he explained. "I ended up doing tests by moving an associated part around and editing the design so it would read better. Once I found an alternation that worked, I got to change the design in CAD. It enhanced the lesson: when doing experiments only change one aspect at a time."

The best advice Matthew offers to other coop students is, "Don't worry. I came in extremely nervous. These people are all very friendly and want to help you further your education, which means do not be afraid to ask questions."

Students may read more about their peers' co-op experiences by logging into their Engineering Professional Practice profile via www.coop.utk.edu, clicking “Resource Library” (on the left margin) and selecting “Students at Work–In Their Own Words.”
