1.      UT Extension Seeks Youth Energy and Environmental Specialist

New position: search committee seeks individual to plan, implement and evaluate a statewide educational program focused on energy and environment for Tennessee youth, and is actively recruiting applicants with degrees in a STEM field and experience in youth education.  Screening of applications begins December 1, 2012 and will continue until position is filled.

2.      Time to Submit Items for Ready for the World Spring Passport

It's time to begin submitting your events, activities, speakers, and programs to be included in the Ready for the World Passport for the spring semester. Faculty, staff, and students are urged to use an electronic form to quickly and easily provide information about events related to UT’s international and intercultural initiative.

3.      2012 C. Peter Magrath University/Community Engagement Award Announced

East Carolina University’s Intergenerational Community Center is the 2012 recipient of the C. Peter Magrath University/Community Engagement Award for creating a dynamic community center that meets the urgent needs of the underserved community of West Greenville, NC.  The other three 2012 finalists included Colorado State University; Miami University, and a North Carolina State University/North Carolina A&T University Collaboration.  UT’s Knoxville’s Homeless Management Information System (KnoxHMIS) was honored with an Exemplary Program Award in the 2012 competition.

4.      NSSE Annual Results 2012 Released Today

The National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) has released its annual report, entitled Promoting Student Learning and Institutional Improvement: Lessons from NSSE at 13.  Report findings include how financial challenges affect college students, and the mixed role of social media in student learning.

5.      Call for Papers:  Community Engagement in Crisis Informatics Research

(ISCRAM2013- Baden-Baden, Germany) Community Engagement is often an afterthought in crisis planning, recovery efforts, and research.  Overlooking community has repeatedly been identified as a failure point in major disasters.  Creating effective, enduring research partnerships that bring together information scientists, community engaged researchers, and a wide range of community stakeholders (including, but not limited to, first responders) can improve scientific understanding of disasters and strengthen community response capacity. Conference May 12-15, 2013.

The IMPACT Conference brings together college students, nonprofit professionals, campus administrators, and a team of service members to share experiences, stories, and resources in their work for social change.  Workshop proposals are sought in the following areas: * Building and Enhancing Community Service Programs * Administrators * Alternative Break Programs. * AmeriCorps/National Service/Year of Service programs * Issues and Advocacy * Leadership and Professional Skills/Career Development * Life after College/Recent Graduate * Service-Learning and * Spirituality/Faith and Service.

7.      Robert Wood Johnson Foundation: Public Health Services and Systems Research

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) seeks to expand the evidence base for effective public health policy and practice through investment in Public Health Services and Systems Research (PHSSR). PHSSR, a multi-disciplinary field of study, provides a framework for examining the organization, financing, delivery and quality of public health services within communities and the impact of those services on the health of the public. This solicitation, guided by the national research agenda for PHSSR, aims to further advance the field with the ultimate goal of improving the performance and efficiency of public health agencies and their system partners and the health of the people they serve. Short-term studies awards of up to $200,000 each;  Complex and comprehensive studies – awards of up to $450,000.

8.      AAC&U Bringing Theory to Practice Project Funding Opportunities

The Bringing Theory to Practice Project invites proposals for projects that will promote engaged learning, civic development and engagement, and psychosocial well-being of college and university students. We are especially interested in efforts that will enable students to have transformational educational experiences, and proposals for how institutions can transform and sustain their priorities and practices. Proposals for Seminar Grants (up to $1,000) and Program Development Grants (up to $10,000).

9.      Doris Duke Charitable Foundation: Undergraduate Conservation Research Program

The Doris Duke Charitable Foundation seeks short (three pages or less) Letters of Interest (LOIs) from non-profit organizations (including academic institutions) interested in developing a new nationwide program to engage undergraduate students from underrepresented racial/ethnic groups in rigorous research experiences in conservation biology (and other disciplines relevant to land, water, and wildlife conservation). The purpose of the program is to influence student choices regarding college majors, graduate education and early career opportunities. The Foundation anticipates awarding one grant providing up to $500,000 a year for three years to support a single nationwide program that will draw students from multiple academic institutions in the U.S.

10.  William Randolph Hearst Endowed Fellowship for Minority Students

The Aspen Institute Program on Philanthropy and Social Innovation (PSI) in Washington, DC, offers the William Randolph Hearst Endowed Fellowship three times annually.  The fellowship, which is based on academic excellence and need, is open to both undergraduate and graduate students of color. The Hearst Fellow serves as an intern with PSI in the Washington, DC office of the Aspen Institute.  Through this fellowship, PSI seeks to introduce a diverse group of students to issues and challenges affecting philanthropy, social enterprise, nonprofit organizations, and other actors in the social sector.

12.  When do Participatory Development Projects Work?

(The World Bank)  Involving local communities in decisions that affect their lives is central to making development more effective, and it has the potential to transform the role that poor people play in development by giving them voice and agency. But inducing civic engagement in development is not easy, says a new World Bank report, which covers community development and decentralization projects supported by the Bank and other donors.

13.  New Report Released: "Engaged Learning Communities: Aligning Civic Engagement and Economic Development in Community-Campus Partnerships"

(Inside Higher Ed) Merging campus civic engagement and economic development can create "engaged learning economies," which are a boon to both colleges and local communities, according to a new report from Campus Compact. The report describes 25 examples where this has worked, including efforts by Widener University to work with local groups to help improve the economy of low-income Chester, Pa., which is home to the university.

15.  Idea File:  Graduate Certificate of Engagement & Partnerships

Engagement Australia (EA) is partnering with Volunteering Queensland (VQ) – a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) for the development of a Graduate Certificate of Engagement & Partnerships (GCE&P). EA is responsible for developing, teaching and assessing the course, and VQ will be responsible for all aspects of course administration, such as student enrolments and compliance.  The Certificate has itself been developed used engagement principles, using online surveys, conferences, and other collaborative processes.
