[CURENT]

CURENT and SWE host 'Tomorrow's Engineers Today'

Twenty-six young women from area high-schools visited campus on Friday, November 2, to learn more about engineering. The program, called "Tomorrow's Engineers Today," was organized by UT's chapter of Society of Women Engineers (SWE) and CURENT. This program aligns with CURENT's educational outreach initiative to assist in the creation of a new generation of engineers from more diverse backgrounds.

Students from Lenoir City High School, West High School, and L&N STEM Academy took part. They toured laboratories, interacted with robots, performed some hands-on lab, and attended a panel discussion. The group also got hands-on lab experience designing marshmallow/toothpick bridges and working with fuel cell and solar cars from TN-SCORE (Tennessee Solar Conversion and Storage using Outreach, Research and Education). Featured co-op student: Brian Payne

[Brian Douglas Payne]Our student this week is Brian Payne, pictured at right, a mechanical engineering major who accepted a co-op at Nissan Motor Manufacturing Corporation of USA, located in Smyrna, Tennessee.

"I am on a one year co-op with Nissan in the Trim and Chassis New Model Department," said Payne. "I work in the equipment group, and they are in charge of designing and fabricating new equipment to support the new models that come into the plant for production. My responsibilities include being in charge of my own projects while helping out with other projects in my group."

One of the biggest challenges that Payne had to overcome while on his assignment was the challenge of management.

"As a Nissan Equipment engineer, you are required to manage your project," Payne explained. "At the start, I was challenged to find all of the required people to talk to
for my project. After a while, it became easier to find the people I needed to find due to me finding out who was where."

Likewise, the most valuable benefit Payne received during his co-op assignment was the "tool of management."

To other coop students wanting to consider this employer, Payne advises, "Be prepared for an educational experience."

Students may read more about their peers' co-op experiences by logging into their Engineering Professional Practice profile via www.coop.utk.edu<http://www.coop.utk.edu>, clicking “Resource Library” (on the left margin) and selecting “Students at Work–In Their Own Words.”
