OUTREACH & ENGAGEMENT NEWS:
1.
2012 Outreach Grant Winners Announced: Eight UT Projects Funded to Engage with Community
Eight UT partnerships were awarded funds for projects that extend the university’s reach into the community.
UT Outreach Incentive Grants are presented through a competitive process for outreach and engagement activities in research, scholarship, or creative activity, and in teaching or service. Funded projects range from an engagement effort with Knoxville community
members to research best practices in promoting colorectal cancer screening to a project that will teach high school students about microbial diversity using DNA from their own school’s football field.
2.
(Video) Big Idea: UT’s New Center for Sport, Peace, and Society
Sarah Hillyer is director of the
Center for Sport, Peace, and Society. She and co-founder Ashleigh Huffman have the big idea of using sport as a tool for personal and community development. The Center, housed in the College of Education, Health,
and Human Sciences, is a unique and groundbreaking collaboration between the University of Tennessee and the nonprofit organization Sport 4 Peace. The center uses sport, physical activity, and recreation to promote cultural understanding, to enhance student
learning, to improve community welfare, and to foster social change. The desired result is a civically engaged university and a more unified and inclusive community.
3.
High School Students Receive UT Scholarships in Math Competition
Nearly 600 students from forty-seven Tennessee high schools battled in the UT-Pro2Serve Math Contest held at UT
on October 25. Ten of them were awarded $4,000 annual scholarships to UT. Scholarships are funded by UT and Chancellor Cheek.
4.
Citizen Involvement in the US Endangered Species Act
TODAY (Nov. 8th).
In this presentation, part of the Baker Center Energy and Environment Forum, Emory University’s Berry Brosi will focus on the highly controversial provisions in the US Endangered Species Act that allows citizens to petition for any species to be listed for
protection, or litigate the government’s listing decisions. Arguments have been made that citizen-selected species are chosen to block development projects rather than biological threat. Brosi, however, will show that citizen-selected species are, on average,
more biologically threatened than those chosen by the US Fish and Wildlife Service.
TODAY, November 8th, 2012 -
3:30-5:00 p.m, Howard Baker Center
5.
IARSLCE Seeks Input for Future Publication
The IARSLCE Editorial Fellows, a group of graduate student scholars led by Kathleen Edwards and Barbara Harrison
(Senior Editorial Fellows) and supported by Patti Clayton and Billy O’Steen (Co-Editors) create this wiki-based format, the Proceedings, to increase the public visibility of research related to service-learning and community engagement and to facilitate communication
and collaboration among researchers and practitioner-scholars. Editors would like to gather information about how the Proceeding is being used and how to improve it for future years; they seek those willing to complete a short 10-item on-line survey that can
be accessed from the navigation bar of the Proceedings website.
Please complete survey by November 15, 2012

Core Competencies in Civic Engagement: A Working Paper in the Center for Engaged Democracy’s Policy Paper Series
The Center for Engaged Democracy acts as a central hub for developing, coordinating, and supporting academic programs
- certificates, minors, and majors - around the country focused on civic and community engagement, broadly defined. The Center brings together faculty, administrators, and community partners to support such academic programs through a variety of initiatives
and practices: compiling existing research and documentation to support new and developing programs; sponsoring symposia, conferences, and research opportunities to build a vibrant research base and academic community; and providing a voice and space for dialogue
for the value of such academic programs across higher education.

Why True Collaboration Takes Time
“I’ve recently been reflecting on this enlightening quote by Leo Denise: “Collaborations are interpersonally rather
than structurally determined.” It’s an idea that’s resonated with me this week in light of things we’re experiencing in our practice. It all stems from the challenge posed by people wanting us to present our collaborative approach to solving complex dilemmas
in a neat, concise package complete with price tag. Yet the work we do is so unlike that. Indeed, it’s often difficult to explain why we can’t present our “package” in such cut-and-dried terms.”
16.
Community Engagement and School Transformation
(Public Agenda, Nov. 1) “Closing or turning around a low-performing school is always disruptive, but engaging
the community in decision making can help make school transformation less painful and more likely to succeed. Without deep knowledge of the communities that are affected by turnaround and careful attention to engagement and communication practices, even the
most earnest leaders hoping to inspire change are likely to see their efforts fail.”

Database of Faculty Mentors & Portfolio Reviewers
