EnergX

Laboratory safety presentation

Dean Wayne T. Davis will host a presentation by EnergX safety expert Joseph Estey at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 7, in the Shiloh Room of the University Center. The college's Board of Advisors, ABET reviewers, Dean Davis, and the UT central administration have recognized and made a priority that instructional and research laboratories at UT need to improve safety protocols and processes. This presentation is a step in helping to realize that goal.

Estey will offer his expertise in this area to faculty, staff, and students who work in the many laboratories of the College of Engineering. He will give a definition of safety culture and discuss safety principles and practices with a concentration on the unique challenges in this field for colleges and universities.

The presentation is made possible by EnergX president and COE Board of Advisors member Anthony Buhl.

Featured co-op student: John Utley

John Utley, third from leftOur student this week is John Utley, pictured third from left in this photo, a mechanical engineering major, who accepted a co-op at Alcoa Power Generating, Inc. located in Alcoa, Tennessee.

"I worked in the Maintenance Department with the Reliability Coordinator," said Utley. "My main responsibilities were to help implement Alcoa's Global Best Practice program for
Lubrication Storage and Handling and find solutions for some of the 'bad actors' at the plant. For the best practice program, I interacted with workers from all over the plant determining the oil and grease usage in order to consolidate the number of lubricants."

Utley found that the most valuable benefit he received during his co-op assignment was, the experience of working in a manufacturing environment and having to interact with both management and the laborers.

"I also worked with contractors to set up a central storage facility at one of the existing warehouses at the plant to insulate the building and heat it in order to maintain an appropriate storage environment," he said. "I improved the process at one of the water treatment plants through initiating a new procedure for flushing the pumps pre- and post-operation. Other smaller tasks included developing a strategy for retrofitting the aluminum pot superstructures in order to minimize harmful emissions and help standardize the superstructures, cooperating with different suppliers to bring in new versions of parts that had been failing at a rates that were higher than expected, and coordinate with variable frequency drive training sources."

Students may read more about their peers' co-op experiences by logging into their Engineering Professional Practice profile via www.coop.utk.edu, clicking “Resource Library” (on the left margin) and selecting “Students at Work–In Their Own Words.”
