Library Director

 

The University of Tennessee at Martin invites applications for the position of Library Director, an administrative position with faculty rank and tenure consideration.  The Library Director reports to the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs.  The successful candidate will demonstrate strong leadership skills, exhibit a clear vision and commitment to librarianship, articulate and advocate the library’s strategic directions, provide sound fiscal management, and promote a collaborative environment both within the library, across campus, and throughout the community.

 

The University of Tennessee at Martin is a primary campus in the University of Tennessee System with a combined graduate and undergraduate enrollment of approximately 8,000 students.  The emphasis is solidly on excellence in undergraduate instruction, distance-learning opportunities, and support and advancement in scholarly activities, research and public service

 

The Paul Meek Library is a 120,000 square foot facility which includes three computer labs, including one twenty-four hour lab.  The library is home to the Alliene and Jimmie S. Corbitt Special Collections and the Steven E. Rogers Media Center.   In addition, the building houses research office space for faculty, group-study areas, a bibliographic instruction room, two media classrooms, a multimedia production station and a learning resource center.

 

Primary Functions and Responsibilities:

·         Determine Library goals and objectives that support the University’s mission statement, core academic curriculum, outreach for equitable access to resources, and the promotion of information literacy and librarianship within the campus community, regions, and state.

·         Promote collaboration and collegiality between library faculty and staff in the development of collections and access to electronic resources that best supports the academic programs of the campus and will promote information literacy across the curriculum.

·         Develop and implement strategic plans for the engagement and expansion of library services to the university community. 

·         Prepare, administer and oversee the library multi-million dollar budgets with particular emphasis on collection development, staff development and training, and emerging and evolving technological needs and resource availability.

·         Supervise and encourage professional development of 12 exempt employees (faculty and professional) and 15 non-exempt employees.  Works with the librarians in the setting of professional goals for the upcoming year and with performance assessment.  Provides proper support for the scholarly activity of librarians.

·         Promotes the library as the center of academic life on the campus and as a resource to the community and region. Also, promotes efforts in educational outreach to students, including but not limited to library orientations and bibliographic instruction and consultation.

 

Required Qualifications:

·         Master’s degree in Library or Information Science from an ALA-accredited program.

·         3-5 years demonstrated record of successful and progressively responsible upper level management and leadership experience.

·         At least three years’ experience balancing operating budgets and financial management.

·         Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to cultivate collegial and collaborative relationships with library personnel, the university community, and the Martin community.

·         Demonstrates a firm commitment to librarianship with active participation in professional librarian organizations, workshops, and conferences.

 

Preference:

·         At least 2-3 years academic library experience.

·         At least 2-3 years’ experience as a Library Director.

·         Demonstrated record of successful development and fund-raising abilities, particularly in securing endowments.

·         Demonstrated record of encouraging and coordinating the professional development of all library personnel, especially in working with faculty status librarians.

·         Awareness of current and emerging technology trends for libraries in a dynamic information environment.

·         Demonstrated ability to meet university promotion and tenure requirements.
