Understanding Information Behaviour in Palliative Care: Arguing for Exploring Diverse and Multiple Overlapping Contexts
Because of rapid internet and media communication of research findings, consumers are confronted on a regular basis with new and/or changing medical evidence. This presents a challenge not only to health professionals seeking to deliver evidence-based clinical care, but also to individuals engaged in personal health management. Set in a context where evidence is explicitly evolving, this presentation explores self-positioning within consumer accounts of health information seeking. It also examines how individuals experience, interact with and integrate uncertain health information mediated by the many formal and informal sources which consumers encounter or seek as they make health decisions. Findings have implications for shared patient-clinician decision making and health literacy.
