School Library Media Assistant Professor Position for August 2013
The University of Hawaii Library and Information Science Program, within the Department of Information and Computer Sciences, seeks a visionary faculty member for a full-time, academic year appointment, tenure-track position to begin August 2013 at the rank of Assistant Professor in the area of School Library Media. The LIS Program offers preparation for school media specialist licensure in collaboration with the state Department of Education and the Hawaii Teacher Standards Board. The successful candidate will lead our highly ranked ALA accredited School Library Media Specialist track.
Position Summary: This dynamic individual is expected to teach courses in administration and instruction in K-12 school libraries that are required for state licensure and maintain an active role in advising master's students, supervising graduate internship experiences at K-12 school placements, and participating in professional organizations at the state, national, and international levels. This highly motivated individual will exhibit the potential to become a nationally recognized researcher and scholar in any of the following areas: school library media specialization, digital media pedagogy, youth services in a networked world, online learning, m-learning and educational technology. The ideal candidate will develop a research program integrating elements of library and information science with those of the ICS Department and related units across the university to catalyze new knowledge. Research areas could include indigenous knowledge, educational technology, cultural sustainability, learning analytics, or information technology literacy and instruction.
The ICS department and the LIS Program are highly interdisciplinary and we especially welcome applications from members of under-represented groups working in these or other areas of library and information science with a strong commitment to cross-disciplinary research and cultural diversity. A primary goal of the LIS Program is to provide rich opportunities for students to become future leaders within an expanding global information environment. Through research, teaching and service, the ideal candidate will support the LIS Program, the Department of Information and Computer Sciences, the College of Natural Sciences and related units across campus, and increase the breadth of our contribution to the University’s values: a Hawaiian place of learning, a local to global perspective, sustainability, technology, community and diversity.
Demonstrated teaching excellence is essential. The teaching load is two graduate courses per semester with the option of summer teaching. Teaching modes include face-to-face, and web-based synchronous and asynchronous distance education. All faculty are expected to work with diverse constituencies, teach in the core curriculum, teach using online and hybrid modes, maintain a vigorous research agenda, meet expectations of tenure and promotion, engage in interdisciplinary scholarship, and obtain funding.
Minimum Qualifications
Earned doctorate from an accredited university in Library and Information Science, Education, or a related field; MLIS or equivalent from an ALA-accredited institution; commitment to effective teaching; and poise and good address for meeting and conferring with others.
Desirable Qualifications
College or university teaching experience; and teaching experience in K-12 schools.
The Academic Setting:
The Library and Information Science Program is part of the Department of Information and Computer Sciences within the College of Natural Sciences, and offers an ALA-accredited Master's program, Certificates in Advanced Library and Information Science (CALIS), dual Master’s degree agreements with several disciplines, and participates in a multidisciplinary PhD in Communication and Information Sciences. The Program has over 100 master’s students and over 2600 alumnae. Learning takes place in classrooms with current technology and online with a variety of ICTs. The School Library Media Specialist Track consistently ranks among the top 10 programs in North America. Strong relationships with computer science, information and technology services and library services provide a rich environment for teaching and research.
