OIT to Host "Faculty Meet and Greet"

The Office of Information Technology's Support Organization will host a "Faculty Meet and Greet" on Wednesday, October 31, 2012. All faculty are invited to come and interact with staff from OIT's Instructional Support, Research Support, Digital Media Services, HelpDesk, and Lab Services. The "Masquerade Ball" themed event will take place in our new location on the 5th floor of Greve Hall from 10:30am – 1:30pm. While you are here the Tennessee Teaching and Learning Center will be hosting their open house on the 6th floor. For details, check https://oit.utk.edu/events/meetgreet/ or call 974-9670.

Fall 2012 GTA@OIT Grants Awarded

OIT sponsors GTA@OIT Grants to encourage UTK Graduate Teaching Associates and Assistants (GTAs) to incorporate technology into their teaching. GTAs with sole responsibility for teaching a course are paired with OIT instructional design staff to accomplish their goals for technology use. The Fall 2012 grant recipients are listed below. For more information, contact Christina Goode at [log in to unmask] or 974-6470.

JMP Genomics offers 90-day free trial

A free 90-day trial version of JMP Genomics software is available to faculty, staff and students at all UT campuses. JMP Genomics, from SAS, is an all-in-one package for integrated statistical analysis of genetic marker, microarray, and spectral data (such as proteomics and metabolomics). It is designed to detect differential expression patterns, discover reliable biomarker profiles, and incorporate pathway information into your analysis workflows. JMP Genomics couples the statistical discovery tools and visualization graphics of JMP with the powerful analytics of SAS software to process genomics data from a variety of sources. JMP Genomics 5 introduces capabilities for interfacing with SAS, JMP, R, Excel and other tools. Software and installation instruction can be downloaded for free on the OIT website. Your feedback regarding JMP Genomics will assist us in determing whether or not to obtain the site license for JMP Genomics in the future. Please contact Xiaocun Sun ([log in to unmask] , 865-974-7505) to leave comments or suggestions regarding your experiences with JMP Genomics.

Free Assistance to Improve Research

OIT's Research Computing Support (RCS) team receives many questions about how to analyze data. In many cases, the questions are after the data is collected and thus, it may not be possible to answer key research questions. One of the most frequent problems we see is caused by control groups that differ from the treatment group by more than just the treatment.

Every research design course that covers human or animal studies emphasizes the need for a control group. Organisms change, even when no treatment is applied. The control group needs to be comparable to the treatment group in every feasible way and needs to experience everything the same except for the precise treatment itself. It may not be possible to have groups completely matched on potential confounding variables like blood pressure or grade point average. Statistics can do some correcting for measures like that. But when the groups are treated differently on more than one factor at a time (e.g. healing + empathy + resting), there is nothing statistics can do to fix the study.

RCS consultants are very familiar with experimental design issues. The next time you're designing a study, give us a call. It usually takes less than an hour to review your plans and the help is free! Call the HelpDesk at 974-9900 for an appointment.
