1.      UT a Strong Presence at National Outreach Scholarship Conference

Faculty and staff from a number of UT colleges and departments attended the 13th annual NOSC conference<http://www.nosc2012.ua.edu/> last week at the University of Alabama.  Among them:

*         Lars Dzikus (Kinesiology, Recreation and Sports Studies) gave a presentation entitled Service Learning: Sport and Community Development with Iraqi Refugees, a UT project shared with co-presenters Ashleigh Huffman and Sarah Hillyer (both: Center for Sport, Peace, and Society).

*         Joseph Donaldson (Program Development and Evaluation Specialist for UT Extension), Shirley Hastings (Associate Dean, UT Extension), and Mitch Owen (Mitchen Leadership and Organization Development) presented a session on Comprehensive Strategic Planning Strengthens University Efforts to Advance Tennessee.

*         Thomas K. Davis (School of Architecture) presented his Advocacy for Livable, Transit-Oriented Development: A Collaborative Community Outreach.

*         The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, was recognized with an Exemplary Program Award for its entry for the 2012 W.K. Kellogg/C. Peter Magrath Community Engagement Awards<http://research.utk.edu/pd/magrath.shtml> for a project entitled  Knoxville Homeless Management Information System (KnoxHMIS), submitted by David Patterson (College of Social Work)



2.      UTK, TN-SCORE Co-host State-wide NSF Science Communications Workshop

A National Science Foundation workshop, "Science: Becoming the Messenger," designed to improve the public communications skills of academic researchers and public information officers, will be held on the UT campus on November 7 and 8, 2012. Workshop events on November 7 will be open to principal investigators, early-career researchers, postdocs, graduate students, and public information officers.  Workshop participants are welcome from any university, college, or other research-related institutions in Tennessee. Sessions on November 8 will be limited to a small group of specially selected researchers who will be helped to refine their message further. There is no fee for registration, but preregistration is required.

3.  Center for Leadership and Service: New Resource for All UTK Students

The Center for Leadership and Service has a new online resource for students interested in tracking their service and volunteer hours, both on and off campus. Students with 100 confirmed, logged hours prior to graduation will receive a medallion to wear at Commencement. Students may also request a print-out documenting their service & volunteer hours by e-mailing [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>.

4.      UT/ProServe High School Math Contest Invites UT Participants

The 14th Annual UT/Pro2Serve Math Contest for Tennessee High School Students is a day-long event to be held Thursday, October 25, 2012. Approximately 700 academically distinguished high school students, along with a number of parents, teachers, and chaperons, will be on campus. There is some room for table displays and recruiting efforts in the UC Ballroom and the adjacent rooms during the 11-1 lunch hour.

5.      Opportunities for UT Curricular Service-Learning

Centro Hispano de East Tennessee, The First Tee of Greater Knoxville, The University-Assisted Community Schools Program at Pond Gap Elementary School, and SOAR Youth Ministries are all interested partnering with UT instructors for service-learning or curriculum-based field placements, co-curricular service, professional internships, or engaged research.

6.      Call for Papers: Significance of Community to Individual and Family Well-Being
The Family & Consumer Sciences Research Journal seeks papers for a thematic issue which seeks to stimulate new energy and creative thought about the historical 'sense of social mission' of the family and consumer sciences field through manuscripts that 1) explore the historical and theoretical foundations for a community perspective in family and consumer sciences research, 2) feature examples of a growing body of empirical community-focused scholarship, and 3) point to an agenda for future research and practice based on past and current efforts and identifiable trends.

7.      Imagine America National Conference: Fall 2013

Syracuse, New York, will be the site of Imagine America's (IA) conference in Fall, 2013 - details and call for papers TBA. Each IA conference explores political, social, cultural, and physical contexts particular to the host city that inform local engagement initiatives, and reflect the national agenda that IA's board and membership have defined in any given year. Conferences attract college presidents, administrators, professors, students, and community stakeholders.

8.      J.W. McConnell Family Foundation: Community Service Learning Awards

This program recognizes successful community initiatives supported by robust community service-learning programs with awards of up to $7500.  Awardees will also be celebrated in a video and at a national event.

9.      APAP, MetLife Foundation: Community Participation Grants

The Association of Performing Arts Presenters (APAP) and the MetLife Foundation seek applicants for a second round of "All-In: Re-imagining Community Participation" funding program.  One-year grants of up to $25,000.

10.  American Association of University Women: Community Action Grants

Community Action grants provide funds to individuals, AAUW branches and AAUW state organizations as well as local community-based nonprofit organizations for innovative programs or non-degree research projects that promote education and equality for women and girls. $2,000 - $10,000 grants  provide funding for community-based projects.

Of particular interest to those participating in engaged scholarship and outreach may be the Foundation Directory Online, a searchable database containing nearly 600 grantmaking foundations and companies. 13.  IARSLCE 2012: Conference Materials Now Being Uploaded

Session facilitators from the recent International Association for Research on Service-Learning and Community Engagement (IARSLCE) Conference are now uploading their conference materials (handouts, Powerpoint slides, etc.) onto their Proceedings pages. The Proceedings is an open, online, interactive, actively-curated publication intended to increase the public visibility of research related to service-learning and community engagement and to facilitate communication and collaboration among researchers and practitioner-scholars.

14.  Generating, Deepening, and Documenting Learning: The Power of Critical Reflection in Applied Learning

(Sarah Ash and Patti Clayton: Journal of Applied Learning in Higher Education) This article shares some best practices about assessing student learning, and using tools that transcend any one particular curricular or co-curricular context. Some have found this work useful in designing well-aligned learning goals, reflection prompts, and rubrics.

15.  Innovative Practices in Peer Review: Expanding the Boundaries for Community-Engaged Scholarship

Community-Campus Partnerships for Health and Community-Engaged Scholarship for Health co- sponsored a symposium at the International Association for Research on Service-Learning & Community Engagement conference last month, which launched a new initiative, ReThinking Peer Review, that aims to catalyze a conversation and action research agenda around expanding conventional notions of peer review to support community-engaged scholarship.

16.  AACU: Periodical Examines Civic Engagement and Student Success

The Association of American Colleges and Universities' most recent edition of Diversity & Democracy is now available online. This issue highlights current research on the connections between civic engagement and student success, defined broadly across a range of outcomes. It shares civically engaged programs and related educational strategies that yield student success by a variety of measures.

18.  Free Download:  Community Volunteering: A Few Things for You to Know

"Community Volunteering: A Few Things For You to Know" is a peer-reviewed, six-page document intended for both program leadership and volunteers. The "Volunteer Handout" section offers thumbnail discussions of important volunteerism topics, and the "Key Points List" is a one-page summary of behavioral guidelines. The document, or portions thereof, could be used in volunteer orientation, continuing education trainings, or reference materials, and may be adapted or elaborated upon to suit a specific program's needs.
