Dr. Cindy Davis and Connie Rust, PhD Student, Publish Research on Breast Cancer

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Efforts to increase awareness of the disease often center around events such as the American Cancer Society's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walks where survivors are honored, awareness booths provide information, and money is raised for research and services.

One participant in this year's Strides event was Connie Rust, a doctoral student at the College of Social Work and a 14-year cancer survivor. However, Rust's efforts in the fight against cancer include more than grassroots activities. Rust and a number of CSW researchers, are working to extend the understanding of breast cancer, through social work research. They seek to provide data for those seeking cures and information for those coping with the aftermath of treatment and living as a survivor.

Dr. Cindy Davis, CSW professor, is concluding a 2-year randomized trial, testing a psycho-educational group intervention designed to improve coping and quality of life for African-American breast cancer survivors. According to Davis, "Although there have been many medical advances in cancer treatment, the psychosocial and financial burden of cancer is overwhelming to many cancer survivors and their families, especially the underserved."

Dr. Davis with Connie Rust and others have published or have been approved publication for numerous articles pertaining to breast cancer survivors:

Davis, C., Rust, C. & Darby, K. (In press) Coping Skills among African-American Breast Cancer Survivors. Social Work in Health Care.

Davis, C., Darby, K. & Rust, C. (Approved for publication) Cancer survivorship skills: Do African-American cancer survivors have the skills needed to cope with a cancer diagnosis? Journal of Social Work in Health Care.

Gonzalez, S. & Davis, C. (2012). Understanding the Unique Experiences of Undocumented, Hispanic Women Who are Living in Poverty and Coping with Breast Cancer. Journal of Immigrant and Refugee Studies, 10,1, 116-123.

Rust, C. & Davis,C. (Scheduled Publication: June, 2013). Chemo Brain in underserved African-American breast cancer survivors: a qualitative study. Clinical Journal of Oncology Nursing.

Rust received a Doctoral Training Grant in Oncology Social Work from the American Cancer Society. She will defend her dissertation this month on Health Literacy and Medication Adherence among African American Breast Cancer Survivors. She is the first CSW PhD student to receive the ACS dissertation award to focus her work on cancer research.
