Featured co-op student: Aaron Pinto

[Aaron Pinto]Our student this week is Aaron Pinto, pictured at right, an electrical engineering major who accepted a co-op at Duke Energy Corporation located in Charlotte, North Carolina.

"I worked on the Regulated Portfolio Optimization (RPO) Trading floor in the Regulated Portfolio Optimization and Bulk Power Marketing Department," said Pinto. "My responsibilities included running various reports and collecting data upon request from my Supervisor. In addition, I calculated the cost and revenue of specific run of peaking Combustion Turbines to ensure that they received proper reimbursement from the ISO. I also compiled monthly P&L statements for all of the gas powered units."

The most valuable benefit Aaron received during his co-op assignment was, real-world job experience.

"I learned valuable insight into how a power company allocates resources and plans generation in order to meet the demand of the loads," Pinto said. "In Addition, in my first week of work a multimillion dollar merger was announced so through hearing and learning about merger integration meetings I really learned about the inner workings of a power company and the logistics behind what goes on."

Advice that Pinto would give other co-op students is: "Be proactive!"

Students may read more about their peers' co-op experiences by logging into their Engineering Professional Practice profile via www.coop.utk.edu<http://www.coop.utk.edu>, clicking “Resource Library” (on the left margin) and selecting “Students at Work–In Their Own Words.”
