Featured co-op student: Austin Hoffeditz

[Austin Hoffedtiz]Our student this week is Austin Hoffeditz, pictured at right, a mechanical engineering major who accepted a co-op at BorgWarner Turbo Systems located in Arden, North Carolina. Hoffeditz describes what department he worked in and what his main responsibilities were.

“For my first rotation at BorgWarner I’ve had the opportunity to work in the Manufacturing department," he said. "Responsibilities in my department ranged anywhere from updating files on the computer to installing new equipment on the assembly floor. One of the main projects I was given in my first rotation was to help in updating a set of work instructions for a camera system that’s used to check for defects or missing parts in the turbochargers. Another project included working with other system manufacturers to gain information and obtain quotes to purchase equipment for the assembly lines. I was also given the opportunity to work in the measurement lab to do measurement testing on several components of a turbocharger.”

The biggest challenge that Austin had to overcome while on this assignment was running into problems while working on a project, and not knowing where to go from there.

"The key lesson I learned was to ask questions and utilize the experience of the people working around me," Hoffeditz said. “Working at BorgWarner has been an awesome experience. The people at BorgWarner are some of the nicest people and to get the chance to work with them has been great. In addition, the employees here are all very knowledgeable of their fields and have been more than willing to help answer any questions I’ve had along the way.”

Hoffeditz says the most valuable benefit he received from this work assignment was the work experience.

"For me it provided a better understanding of an engineering work environment as well as work experience for future employers,” said Hoffeditz.

Students may read more about their peers' co-op experiences by logging into their Engineering Professional Practice profile via www.coop.utk.edu<http://www.coop.utk.edu>, clicking “Resource Library” (on the left margin) and selecting “Students at Work – In Their Own Words.”
