Dr. George Hyfantis

Governor Haslam appoints Hyfantis to board

Governor Bill Haslam has appointed Dr. George Hyfantis, adjunct professor, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, to the new, combined, Tennessee Underground Storage Tank and Solid Waste Disposal Control Board. This new board combines the regulatory oversight functions of the former Petroleum Underground Storage Tank Board and the Solid Waste Disposal Control Board. This regulatory board consists of fourteen members, each representing specific interests ranging from the waste management and petroleum industries to the environmental community. Hyfantis was chosen to represent an institution of higher learning.

Hyfantis has been an adjunct professor in civil engineering for over thirty years, teaching mainly our graduate course in Solid and Hazardous Waste Management, CEE 558. He brings his breadth of experience in the private sector not only to his graduate class but also to the new board. Dr. Hyfantis has served previously on the Underground Storage Tank Board as the environmental representative, serving as chairman for ten years and is also on the Solid Waste disposal Control Board as an industrial representative.

Featured co-op student: Kathryn Barnes

[Kathryn Barnes]Our student this week is Kathryn Barnes, pictured at right, a civil engineering major who accepted a co-op at Eastern Federal Lands Highway Division/Federal Highway Administration located in Sterling, Virginia.

"I worked inside the construction department of EFLHD. I worked as an inspector on a project on the Blue Ridge Parkway," said Barnes. "I was in charge of making sure everything was done correctly and that the Park's department was happy with the work. I was outside a lot watching and observing the contractors. I did a lot of paperwork and worked with my supervisor on making sure everything in the estimate was taken care of."

The work load was the biggest challenge that Kathryn experienced. "I felt like I was drowning in work and that I was really inexperienced," she said. "To overcome this I asked a lot of questions and slowly but surely got both of my feet on the ground."

Barnes learned a lot from her co-op assignment. "It is a great way to dip your feet into civil engineering, and what the aspect of engineering and being a project engineer for EFLHD would be like," she said.

Students may read more about their peers' co-op experiences by logging into their Engineering Professional Practice profile via www.coop.utk.edu<http://www.coop.utk.edu>, clicking “Resource Library” (on the left margin) and selecting “Students at Work – In Their Own Words.”
