Featured co-op student: Ben Byers

[Ben Byers]Our student this week is Ben Byers, pictured at right, a mechanical engineering major who accepted a co-op at The Dow Chemical Company located in Midland, Michigan.

"For my final work term with Dow, I was assigned to the Solar Solutions business," explained Byers of his main responsibilities. "This team within Dow was devoted to developing the POWERHOUSE™ Solar Shingle. I was specifically assigned to the small team of manufacturing representatives who were responsible for the accurate construction, commissioning, and startup of this new facility—which was years in the making. In this role, I provided support to the manufacturing representatives who were in charge of ensuring the advanced utility and process control systems were properly installed, programmed, and functional before authorizing the turnover from construction to operations. This process involved working with many other companies to make sure the as-built plant met the designed process specifications by performing P&ID checks on the various utility systems, carrying out functional checks to ensure mechanical integrity and correct operation, and the final system review to authorize it for startup. Additionally, as the utility systems were completed, my role allowed me to work with the setup of large-scale production equipment from around the world. These massive machines required intricate setups and site acceptance testing to verify the product specifications were met and that the equipment could run safely and reliably within the prescribed guidelines. Overall, the assignment was unique, as it allowed me to see a different aspect of engineering: the commissioning of a significantly large and complex pilot plant for the solar shingle full-scale production, and it provided a great opportunity to gain experience in the challenges associated with the development of an unprecedented process."

Byers said that the biggest challenge he overcame during his work assignment was in carefully analyzing the utility systems, built by the construction department, to determine if they were acceptable as-built or if the new plant needed the system to be changed in order to function as desired.

"To accomplish this, I had to troubleshoot flow rates, instrumentation, mechanical issues, intricate valving, etc." Byers said. "Since the solar business is relatively new to Dow, the plant itself saw a lot of engineering issues which required in-depth investigation and attention which ultimately provided me the most valuable benefit—experience creating a reliable manufacturing process."

Students may read more about their peers' co-op experiences by logging into their Engineering Professional Practice profile via www.coop.utk.edu<http://www.coop.utk.edu>, clicking “Resource Library” (on the left margin) and selecting “Students at Work – In Their Own Words.”
