LIBRARY DIRE CTOR – VIGO COUNTY (IN) PUBLIC LIBRARY

Discover the Possibilities—as the next director of the Vigo County Public Library! The Library Board of Trustees seeks a new leader to help continue and enhance the Library’s successful role as the County’s creative, cultural, and collaborative connection.  The Board wants a director who will work strategically with local organizations and agencies and be responsive to the needs and concerns of staff, customers and the community.  Vigo County Public Library is a separate taxing authority with a tax rate exclusively dedicated to public library services.  Governed by a seven-member Board of Trustees, the Library staff of 78 (59 full-time and 19 part-time), serve the 107,848 citizens in Vigo County with a budget of $6.97 million. The Library consists of the Main Library (69,600 sq. ft.) in downtown Terre Haute, a single branch facility (West Terre Haute) and active Outreach and Community Services programs. The challenge for the next Director will be to move forward on the Library's new strategic plan (currently under development) leveraging strong community relationships and partnerships while continuing to provide the outstanding levels of service and programs for the community.

 

Vigo County is located along the western edge of Indiana bordering Illinois and Terre Haute, the county seat, is at the intersection of two major roadways: US Hwy 40 from California to Maryland, and US Hwy 41 from Michigan to Florida, making downtown’s "7th and Wabash" the Crossroads of America.  This sobriquet is further enhanced by its proximity to other major Midwest cities—only 77 miles southwest of Indianapolis and within 185 miles of Chicago, St. Louis, Louisville, and Cincinnati. Terre Haute is home to Indiana State University (ISU) with a student population of approximately 10,500 and the prestigious, private engineering school Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology is located just east of the city.  The area also boasts a full-service community college and two private four-year colleges in and around the city.  The Swope Art Museum, Turman Art Gallery on the ISU campus, several galleries, multiple music venues, the Vigo County Historical Society Museum, Children’s Museum and CANDLES Holocaust Museum all add to the cultural fabric of the community.  The Library is a strong local partner and plays a vital role in the community’s development.  Terre Haute’s revitalization efforts were recognized in 2010 when the Indiana Chamber of Commerce named it Indiana's Community of the Year.  Additional information on the Library, the County and the area can be found at Vigo Links.

 

Responsibilities. The Director reports to a seven-member Library Board of Trustees and works with the Board, staff, and major stakeholders to establish the strategic vision for the Library aligning the Library’s mission, goals and objectives with the community’s needs and priorities. This is complex executive work planning, directing, managing and overseeing the activities and operations of the library, coordinating services and activities with the Board of Library Trustees, local government, academic institutions, and other agencies, ensuring local, state and federal laws, rules and regulations applicable to Indiana libraries and the by-laws, policies, and directives of the Library Board are being met.  See Library Director job description for additional details.

 

Qualifications. ALA-accredited Master's Degree in Library Science; the ability to obtain and retain an Indiana Librarian Certificate 1; and a minimum of six years of professional experience including a minimum of three years of supervisory and/or management experience. Essential attributes and skills include: vision, creativity, energy and enthusiasm; superior written and oral communications skills; demonstrated success in effectively promoting library services to the community; political acumen; collaborative and consensus-building skills; experience in recruiting, mentoring, evaluating and retaining an excellent staff; and a thorough knowledge of current trends and “best practices” for library service.  Please see the job description for specific detailed information. Compensation.  The starting salary range is $85,000-100,000 (with placement dependent upon experience and qualifications) with an attractive benefits package.

Job Description: The Youth Librarian position is responsible for planning, coordinating and implementing library services, programs and outreach, within the library and for the community. This position leads and supports the district’s mission and core values. Work is performed with considerable independent judgment and initiative.

  EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

• Demonstrates a thorough knowledge of professional library principles, public reference service expertise, homework help, outreach and presentation skills, and an understanding of public library operations. Demonstrates a good working knowledge of the Code of Ethics of the American Library Association.

• Builds relationships through exceptional patron service and ongoing outreach to individuals and organizations in our community. Acknowledges patrons, helps them at their point of need, partners with them to meet their goal and follows up.

• Takes ownership of the customer experience by embracing new technologies, modifying the collection to meet patron needs, looking for new ways to reach customers outside the library, and creating a sense of discovery and exploration in the branch.

. • Performs storytimes using the ALA Every Child Ready to Read early literacy skills. Encourages caregivers to build on the skills.

. • Anticipates trends that will impact libraries, literacy, publishing, and information technology. Embraces innovation and experimentation. Recommends thoughtful change to help the District stay relevant and vital.

• Demonstrates expertise in reader’s advisory services to assist children and parents with identifying materials appropriate for diverse ages, interests, reading abilities, learning styles, and special needs requirements.

• Effectively assists patrons of all ages by providing professional library reference and readers’ advisory services. Assists patrons in using reference tools, conducting in-depth research, locating materials and managing accounts. Instructs patrons in the use of resources across formats and platforms.

• Stays abreast of new research and trends in the teaching of reading, children’s learning styles, child development, and parenting styles in order to provide practical advice to parents or guardians.

• Serves as a liaison to Douglas County Schools to promote library collections and services.

• Serves as a community speaker on the topic of children’s literature and early literacy. Advocates the role of the library in increasing children’s and young adults’ desire to read for recreational and educational purposes.

• Demonstrates interest in current events and community concerns, and a command of numerous subject areas to assist patrons and staff with their inquiries.

Desired Skills & Experience

• Working knowledge of the professional principles of youth services to include reference and readers’ advisory tools and methodologies, including print and electronic sources is required.

• Working knowledge of children's collections and programming is required.

• Demonstrate a positive attitude toward staff and patrons of all ages in all contact environments.

• Requires the ability to work under periods of occasional stress resulting from peak periods of patron service requests.

• Must have the ability to learn and become proficient in skills, functions and technologies required to perform job duties, working effectively independently or as part of a team to complete tasks as assigned.

• Must communicate effectively using English. Must read, write and understand English at a level appropriate to the position.

• Computer Skills: Must demonstrate competency in computer use including internet, email, Microsoft Office Products (or equivalent). Keyboard skills required at an equivalent of typing 35 words per minute with minimal errors. Must be able to learn and become proficient with equipment and software programs as required to effectively and efficiently perform assigned duties.

• Physical Abilities: Must have the physical ability, stamina, mobility and manual dexterity to: Stand, walk, bend to floor level, reach to a height over 70 inches, read a minimum 8 point font, and work at computer workstations, frequently. Handle materials, push/pull loads with a force of up to 35 pounds, carry 15 pounds, lift up to 35 pounds, grip up to 15 pounds, kneel, squat and climb, on a regular basis. On a limited basis, tolerate residual smoke, dust, mold or foreign substances on materials.

  QUALIFICATIONS:

• Education: Requires a Bachelor’s degree in Library Science or in Education, Reading/Literacy, or related field is required. A Masters of Library Science degree is preferred.

• Experience: Two years previous experience in public library children's services, education or closely related field is required.

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

LIBRARY DIRE CTOR – VIGO COUNTY (IN) PUBLIC LIBRARY

Discover the Possibilities—as the next director of the Vigo County Public Library! The Library Board of Trustees seeks a new leader to help continue and enhance the Library’s successful role as the County’s creative, cultural, and collaborative connection. The Board wants a director who will work strategically with local organizations and agencies and be responsive to the needs and concerns of staff, customers and the community. Vigo County Public Library is a separate taxing authority with a tax rate exclusively dedicated to public library services. Governed by a seven-member Board of Trustees, the Library staff of 78 (59 full-time and 19 part-time), serve the 107,848 citizens in Vigo County with a budget of $6.97 million. The Library consists of the Main Library (69,600 sq. ft.) in downtown Terre Haute, a single branch facility (West Terre Haute) and active Outreach and Community Services programs. The challenge for the next Director will be to move forward on the Library's new strategic plan (currently under development) leveraging strong community relationships and partnerships while continuing to provide the outstanding levels of service and programs for the community.

Vigo County is located along the western edge of Indiana bordering Illinois and Terre Haute, the county seat, is at the intersection of two major roadways: US Hwy 40 from California to Maryland, and US Hwy 41 from Michigan to Florida, making downtown’s "7th and Wabash" the Crossroads of America. This sobriquet is further enhanced by its proximity to other major Midwest cities—only 77 miles southwest of Indianapolis and within 185 miles of Chicago, St. Louis, Louisville, and Cincinnati. Responsibilities. The Director reports to a seven-member Library Board of Trustees and works with the Board, staff, and major stakeholders to establish the strategic vision for the Library aligning the Library’s mission, goals and objectives with the community’s needs and priorities. This is complex executive work planning, directing, managing and overseeing the activities and operations of the library, coordinating services and activities with the Board of Library Trustees, local government, academic institutions, and other agencies, ensuring local, state and federal laws, rules and regulations applicable to Indiana libraries and the by-laws, policies, and directives of the Library Board are being met. Qualifications. ALA-accredited Master's Degree in Library Science; the ability to obtain and retain an Indiana Librarian Certificate 1; and a minimum of six years of professional experience including a minimum of three years of supervisory and/or management experience.
