The University of Tennessee (UT) Libraries seeks an energetic, flexible, responsible, and service-oriented individual to join the Integrated User Services Department as the Evening Supervisor. This department provides public services, student programming, and classroom and information support to students, staff, faculty, and the community.

Position Description:
This is an exempt supervisory position in Hodges Library. This person must make critical decisions that impact operations and security in a high traffic area of the University Libraries during the 2nd shift. The person in this position is responsible for managing public services, overseeing security, and maintaining building operations on the 2nd shift when other supervisors and administrators are not present. Since leaders of units and departments are not present at night, this position must also take action in these areas when necessary. This individual must be dynamic, professional, and diplomatic in the provision of services, oversight of policy interpretation, and decision-making. This position plans and directs the work of Library Customer Support staff during evenings and weekends. The person in this position is accountable for ensuring that each employee under his/her supervision provides accurate and excellent customer service. The individual must work effectively with UT Police, the Office of Information Technology and UT faculty, staff, students and the public.

The person in this position hires, supervises, and evaluates staff and student employees and oversees training for tasks that require a wide range of expertise related to customer service. As an exempt employee, the incumbent must be able to come in on all shifts to address problems and ensure adequate staffing. The person must work independently and with a high level of autonomy. This individual will contribute to overall planning and teamwork necessary to accomplish the IUS Department’s and Libraries’ mission and goals.

Responsibilities / Duties:

  *   Manage the delivery of public services through the main Customer Support Desk, email, telephone or any other method of service delivery employed by the Libraries on the 2nd shift
  *   Supervise and train Customer Support staff and students to ensure that policies and procedures are carried out in a standard and consistent manner
  *   Coordinate with Community Service Officers (CSOs) and UT Police to provide adequate security for the building at night
  *   Must be able to come in on all shifts to address problems and ensure adequate staffing in coordination with the IUS Manager
  *   Assist library users with computer applications and services delivered by the University Libraries

  *   Supervise charge and discharge of circulating collections; problem-solving for self-check equipment
  *   Manage the operation of circulation, reserve, and other modules or software for providing customer service
  *   Schedule Hodges Library rooms including media viewing classrooms, library classrooms, and the Lindsay Young Auditorium
  *   Maintenance of the media collection, physical reserves, and other materials
  *   Tasks related to opening and closing Hodges Library
  *   Other duties as required

This position deals directly with library customers including students, faculty, staff, and the community. This person must be aware of options for retrieval of information in both print and digital formats. Requires expertise with several complex library computer systems, familiarity with organization of the libraries, delivery of materials, Research Services, OIT-managed services. This position combines the need for strong technical skills with high-level customer service and communication skills and is crucial to the smooth operation of the department.

Required Qualifications:

  *   Bachelor’s degree
  *   Three years recent supervisory experience
  *   Demonstrated record of progressive responsibility in public services environment
  *   Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a collaborative environment accompanied by a creative, flexible, and problem-solving attitude
  *   Knowledge and skills in information based technology related to research and student learning
  *   Ability to work in a changing environment and under pressure
  *   Ability to balance multiple tasks and set priorities independently
  *   Must be able to work all shifts to ensure adequate staffing
  *   Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  *   Experience with Windows-based computing and MS Office applications
  *   Good negotiation/mediation skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  *   Experience in a library setting
  *   Experience using instructional technologies
  *   Proficiency with search strategies used in bibliographic databases, online catalogs, and the Internet
