UBC iSchool Students Win National, International Awards
UBC iSchool students are distinguishing themselves as scholars on the national and international stage, earning several awards for academic promise and excellence. Scott Owens is the third UBC iSchool student to win a Canada Graduate Scholarship from the Social Sciences & Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) this year. SSHRC is the major funding body for social sciences and humanities research in Canada. Also earning a SSHRC this year are Isabel Taylor in the Master of Archival Studies program, and entering student Erin Peters in the Master of Library and Information Studies program.

Students have also been successful in getting recognition from the ARMA International Educational Foundation. Seven UBC students - Kane Klemic, Valérie Léveillé, Lara Mancuso, Victoria Ostrzenski, Kevin Owen, Joy Rowe, and Isabel Taylor - have won awards in support of their graduate education focusing on archives and records. Finally, two students, Ebony Magnus and Amber Saundry, were selected as Diversity Scholars under the Association of Research Libraries' Initiative to Recruit a Diverse Workforce. Ebony has begun her second year in the MLIS program, and Amber is an entering MLIS. ARL awarded 14 scholarships through the IDRW program <http://www.arl.org/diversity/init/index.shtml> this year to students from across North America.

Earlier this summer, UBC iSchool Director Dr. Caroline Haythornthwaite and Dr. Louise Spiteri, Director of Dalhousie University's School of Information Management, presented "Breathing New Life into the Profession: LIS Education in the 21st Century."
