University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, School of Information Studies Updates, News & Events September 27, 2012 SOIS Faculty & Staff Updates The 2 nd National Joint Conference of Librarians of Color SOIS was well represented at the 2 nd National Joint Conference of Librarians of Color which took place last week. SOIS Senior Advisor Twyla McGhee and SOIS student Tiffany Thorton represented the School at the exhibits. Professor Dietmar Wolfram and PhD students Adriana McClee r, Jeannette Glover , Jennifer Thiele , and Renee Kapusniak presented “Overcoming Barriers to Information Access” during the conference. Kelly Webster , a SOIS Alumni, received the JCLC Advocacy Award from the American Indian Library Association. Wisconsin Academic Advising Association SOIS Advisors Jessica Hutchings , Toby Deutsch , and Angela Sadowsky presented “#DigitalAdvising @YourSchool!” at the Wisconsin Academic Advising Association conference ( http://www.wacada.org/index.php?id=132 ) at UW-Lacrosse. The presentation was well-received, and they have been asked to be the keynote speakers at next year’s conference. Toby and Jessica will be presenting this program at the National Academic Advising Association Conference (NACADA) ( http://www.nacada.ksu.edu/annualconf/2012/index.htm ) in Nashville, Tennessee next week. National Book Festival Tom Walker , Associate Professor and MLIS Program Director, represented the School of Information Studies and the Wisconsin Center for the Book ( http://wisconsincenterforthebook.wordpress.com/ ) at the National Book Festival ( http://www.loc.gov/bookfest/ ) in Washington, D.C. from September 21-23. Dr. Walker’s professional experience ranges from public services in corporate and public libraries to indexing and abstracting for a government database and indexing and cataloging for a trade association. He has served as both Interim Dean and Associate Dean at SOIS. This lecture has the aim to talk about ethical values and problems which can arise from knowledge organization and representation processes. We will also present an example of how ethical problems could be perceived when a research was conducted to see how women are represented in four Brazilian indexing languages. It starts with a report about the “The Knowledge Space Lab”, founded by the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, and dealing with the emergence of category structures in knowledge spaces as different as libraries and the world-wide web. At the core of this project stands a comparison of the evolution of the Wikipedia topical category structure and the Universal Decimal Classification of Paul Outlet, But, the more fundamental question at stack is how to create new – visually enhanced and tangible - interfaces for collections. GIS today is a globally dominant technology, and the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy has provided $200 million for the Big Data Initiative that emphasizes mining large spatial datasets and use of GIS. Yet GIS can be ethically criticized for being an elitist technology by virtue of its technological complexity and cost. A digital divide in GIS exists along class and race lines, whereby traditionally marginalized citizens have been excluded from using the technology. This presentation addresses the thorny issue of uneven access to GIS and the associated social power it confers. Del Negro, PhD, is an Assistant Professor at the Graduate School of Library and Information Science at Dominican University in River Forest, Illinois, where she teaches Foundations of Library and Information Science, Children’s Literature, Storytelling, Young Adult Literature, and the doctoral seminar on reading. Professor Del Negro also serves on the advisory board for the Butler Center for Children’s Literature at Dominican University. She recently collaborated with Ellin Greene on the fourth edition of the classic storytelling textbook, Storytelling: Art & Technique, released in January, 2010. Her newest storytelling book, Folktales Alive!: Practical Tips for Playful Programming, will be published by the American Library Association in Fall, 2012.
