Professor Dietmar Wolfram from the School of Information Studies (SOIS) at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee has been awarded the 2012 Thomson Reuters Outstanding Information Science Teacher Award by the American Society for Information Science and Technology (ASIS&T). The award recognizes the unique teaching contribution of an instructor in information science.

 

Professor Wolfram has been with SOIS since 1990. He has been instrumental in program and curriculum development and has taught courses at all levels. He led the effort in the approval and implementation of the Bachelor of Science in Information Science and Technology program, and co-chaired, with Professor Hope Olson, the committee that developed the PhD program at SOIS.  Professor Wolfram was also an innovative user of distance learning technologies, offering MLIS course content to students across the state of Wisconsin in the early 1990s, and was an early adopter of Web-based courses at the School.  

 

From 2007 until January 2011, Professor Wolfram was the Director of the PhD Program in Information Studies. Most recently, he served as Interim Dean for the School from February 2011 until July 2012. He received his PhD in Library and Information Science and his MLIS from the University of Western Ontario. His areas of research interest include applied informetrics, information retrieval (IR) system design and evaluation, and modeling and simulation of IR systems.

 

Professor Wolfram has a robust publication list, including the book Applied Informetrics for Information Retrieval Research (2003, Libraries Unlimited) as well as articles in national and international journals. He was awarded $815,000 from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) for his proposal “Overcoming Barriers to Information Access” to support the School’s doctoral program. This past year Professor Wolfram was instrumental in having SOIS admitted into the iSchools organization, a worldwide collective of Information Schools dedicated to advancing the information field, and preparing students to meet the information challenges of the 21st Century.
