Featured co-op student: Matthew Melton

Mary YoungOur student this week is Matthew Melton, pictured at right, who accepted an internship at SI Group, Inc., located in Morristown, Tenn. The chemical engineering major described what department he worked in and what his main responsibilities were.

"I was an intern for the Engineering and Maintenance department," says Melton. "My responsibilities were those of an entry-level engineer at the plant and my projects were reflective of that. Some projects that I worked on were preparing estimations for the removal of old tanks, looking for a supplier for a calibration gas, creating a database of pressure safety valves (complete with pictures!), reviewing expansion plans and making sure the space was ready for new vessels, and working with the mechanical integrity program to ensure vessel safety (included reviewing old data, contacting contractors, overseeing contractor work, and writing finished reports)."

Matthew received the opportunity to be trained as a certified forklift driver. "Other types of training could have been fire response, elevated work, confined space entry, and other plant related topics, said Melton. "Information training regarding plant hazards, regulations, and other relevant topics were also completed during the term.”

Melton said that the most valuable benefit he received by accepting this internship was in gaining experience working within a process plant.

Students may read more about their peers' co-op experiences by logging into their Engineering Professional Practice profile via www.coop.utk.edu, clicking “Resource Library” (on the left margin) and selecting “Students at Work – In Their Own Words.”
