Big Idea: Engineering graduate plans to puts his skills to work in Africa

Stewart Goodwin, a recent graduate in mechanical engineering, is headed around the world to put his skills to use. In October, Goodwin will travel to South Sudan, Africa, to assist with construction of water-supply projects.

"This was largely motivated by my engineering degree and by studying abroad during college," said Goodwin, who got an international look at engineering while traveling with the Semester at Sea program. He hopes to set an example for other engineering students to study abroad and consider international work.

Featured co-op student: Zach Shupe

[Zach Shupe]Our student this week is Zach Shupe, pictured at right, a chemical engineering major who accepted a co-op at Flint Group located in Arden, N.C.

"I was responsible for improving our current product and manufacturing support," said Shupe. "Some of my projects: (1) Adhesion Promotion - I tried various roughening methods and metal treatments to improve adhesion between two layers of our project. I eventually came up with a cost effective solution that greatly improved the adhesion level and longevity. (2) Drying Oven Studies – I proved that the drying oven for one of our products wasn't drying evenly throughout. I adjusted the temperature and dew point which dried the products more evenly and cut our drying time specification in half. (3) 'Franken Cady' – I designed a new Cady gauge (used to measure the thickness of our product) that made gauging more accurate and repeatable with different users."

Shupe learned a key lesson while overcoming a problem during the adhesion-promotion project. "I had tried many roughening techniques and adhesion promoting metal treatments but still didn't have success," he said. "Instead of giving up, I kept trying and came up with a cheap and easy way to implement metal treatment. Lesson learned – KEEP TRYING!"

Shupe says he now has, "Things to talk about in interviews; projects that I ran and completed, things I improved in production, and more."

Students may read more about their peers' co-op experiences by logging into their Engineering Professional Practice profile via www.coop.utk.edu<http://www.coop.utk.edu>, clicking “Resource Library” (on the left margin) and selecting “Students at Work – In Their Own Words.”
