Featured co-op student: Nolan Perry

[Zach Shupe]Our student this week is Nolan Perry, pictured at right, a mechanical engineering major who accepted a co-op at Jackson Energy Authority in Jackson, Tennessee.

“I worked in the Water/Wastewater division of Jackson Energy Authority," said Perry. "Our department dealt with the upkeep of the water and sewer systems in Jackson, Tennessee. I was responsible for organizing the details and contracts for projects that were bid on by contractors who work on the projects with the engineer’s supervision.”

Perry tells us that one of the challenges that he had to overcome during his assignment was overcoming the anxiety of making a mistake in the process of a project. "I solved it by rechecking my work multiple times before I submitted it to my supervisor for revisions," said Nolan. "After revisions were made, I would correct my work until it was to my supervisor’s exact specifications. The lesson I learned was that sometimes you can make mistakes but they can easily be corrected and the mistakes you make only help you become better for future assignments.”

Nolan advises future co-op students to be very attentive and communicate with fellow employees and your supervisors if you need help. He also says the most valuable benefit he received during his co-op assignment was the work experience.

"It gave me a clear view of the workplace and the experience I have gained is worth every minute I spend in the office," he said.

Students may read more about their peers' co-op experiences by logging into their Engineering Professional Practice profile via www.coop.utk.edu<http://www.coop.utk.edu>, clicking “Resource Library” (on the left margin) and selecting “Students at Work – In Their Own Words.”
