Assistant Director – Part time, Regional Libraries

Summary:
An employee in this classification performs professional and technical library work in a variety of assignments on a part-time schedule (20 hours per week). The assistant director is responsible for knowing the libraries in his/her region, developing an intimate understanding of their history, programs and services, goals, strengths and weaknesses. The assistant director is expected to develop strong business relationships with key personnel at each local library, to be accessible, and to provide guidance and advice to board members and library managers. The assistant director assists library boards in policy development and planning; works with local government officials and local library support groups to promote advocacy and awareness; and aids local library directors and staff by providing training, assistance and advice in all areas of public library service. The assistant director also assists libraries in the region with applying for grants. The employee will be expected to travel throughout the region and to attend meetings and training programs at the State Library and Archives in Nashville or in other areas of the state.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Assists public library directors and staff by providing training, assistance and guidance in areas including planning, budgeting, supervision, technology, collection development, resource sharing, service improvements, data collection and statistical analysis.
- Attends local library board meetings as directed to ascertain and assist with library policy, planning and development.
- Plans and presents group and one-on-one training for library services.
- Provides assistance with grant preparation.
- Contributes to reports for local libraries, the regional board, and the State Library and Archives.
- Attends mandatory meetings and training sessions which may require overnight travel.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education and Experience:
· ALA-accredited Masters Degree in Library or Information Science.
· Three years experience in library work, preferably in a public library setting, in an increasingly responsible position.
Knowledge and Abilities:
- Demonstrates excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Possesses intermediate to advanced skills in computer operations.
- Has thorough knowledge of current public library practices and trends, including modern library technology.
- Has working knowledge of online library management systems.
- Strong organizational skills, including the ability to establish priorities, follow project timelines and meet project deadlines.
- Has demonstrated skills in public speaking.
- Understands the requirements of adult education and has the ability to plan and present effective library in-service training and continuing education programs.
- Must be willing and able to work a flexible schedule and travel independently throughout the region and the state.
- Requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, hearing, and speaking.
- Must possess a good driving record and valid driver’s license.
- Ability to move and lift materials of 35 pounds.
- Ability to stoop, bend and lift to file and retrieve materials.
- Must exhibit the ability to be a positive influence within the region and while representing the region.
- Ability to work collegially as part of a team.
- Ability to work in an environment with books that contain dust and other allergens.
Salary: $20.00/hour, part-time 20 hours per week.

The Town of Chapel Hill, NC seeks a passionate, customer service oriented leader for their next Library Director in a renowned municipal system with the highest per capita circulation and a new state of the art library to open in March 2013. The position is open due to a retirement.
Position Responsibilities: The Library Director is responsible for 32 full or part time employees and several temporary and/or seasonal employees, a budget of $2,366,563 and an annual circulation of ~1,040,000. As a municipal library, the Library Director reports to the Town Manager and is the staff liaison with three boards, the CH Library Board of Trustees, Friends of the Library and the CH Public Library Foundation.

Qualifications: Minimum education of a MLS, MPA or related degree, background in diverse front line library roles and five years’ progressive experience in library administration as a division manager, assistant director, or director and public library experience is required.

The Director of Information Resources will provide both strategic and administrative leadership to help meet the company’s regulatory and pharmacovigilance obligations as well as its medical information and R&D information needs and ensure the company remains compliant with all relevant copyright laws
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
Areas of responsibility will include managing the following:
· Digital library and Virtual Library Platform
· Specialty content databases and resources (Embase, Science Direct, Proquest, UpToDate)
· Journal subscriptions

· Postmarketing literature surveillance
· Custom search requests
The director will manage and continue to develop Jazz Pharmaceuticals’ Information Resources function, including print and e-content procurement, literature searches, document delivery, end-user database licensing, management and training, reference support, cataloging, and archiving.
The director will conduct long-term planning and budgeting to develop the company’s information resources. This will include working with all company departments at all sites to ensure that the company’s information resources and services meet their various needs and working with individual departments to develop appropriate policies for handling the company’s various information resources.
The director will also ensure that postmarketing literature surveillance is conducted to meet our surveillance and reporting requirements for all company products.
The director will ensure that all company sites have appropriate access to information resources and will manage the vendor relationships, budget, and copyright issues (including international copyright issues) associated with multisite access.
In addition, the director will advance the company’s content and knowledge management activities, including developing a product-specific publication database, developing innovative ways to improve information sharing and access across the company, and developing an alert system geared to specific company needs.
The director will also promote awareness of the library’s electronic presence and services and will provide employee training in company library systems and resources.
ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS
· At least 2 years of library management experience in a pharmaceutical or medical research environment
· MLS degree or at least 3 years of experience conducting literature searches, classifying, and archiving literature in an online library system

· Thorough understanding of the broad range of corporate information needs
· Exceptional organizational and client service skills
