University of South Florida

School of Information

One Instructor Position

The University of South Florida System is one of the nation's top 63 public research universities and one of 39 community-engaged, four-year public universities as designated by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. USF was awarded $394 million in research contracts and grants in FY 2009/2010. The system offers 232 degree programs at the undergraduate, graduate, specialist and doctoral levels, including the doctor of medicine. It has a $1.5 billion annual budget, an annual economic impact of $3.7 billion, and serves more than 47,000 students on institutions/campuses in Tampa, St. Petersburg, and Sarasota-Manatee. USF is a member of the Big East Athletic Conference.

The USF School of Information (SI) is housed in the College of Arts and Sciences, which consists of 23 academic departments and 22 centers and institutes that are highly collaborative and interdisciplinary in nature.  SI has enjoyed a strong tradition that has primarily focused on the education of information professionals in a variety of settings for several decades. The School continues to evolve and grow, most recently with its Bachelor of Science in Information Studies program, which began as part of SI in Fall 2010. This program integrates a strong foundation in information technology as well as an understanding of human, organizational, policy and other issues. While the degree necessarily provides students with in-depth technical knowledge and skills, emphasis is given to understanding how people interact with information and technology, and other complexities of the information society. The School also has an ALA-accredited Master’s degree (with nearly 350graduate students).

USF SI seeks exceptional faculty to contribute to the growth and evolution of the B.S. in Information Studies. The position is at the full-time Instructor level, with opportunities to move up in the newly approved instructor career path (which generally parallels that of tenure track faculty, yet with a focus on instruction and related duties). Appointments are nine-month with summer teaching opportunities typically available. It is required to have a minimum 4/4 teaching load without a research assignment. The pay is competitive with similar instructor positions nationally, and USF offers an impressive benefits package.

Successful candidates will be those who are committed to teaching a variety of courses in areas supporting the Undergraduate Program in Information Studies, particularly in the core curriculum, and should have a solid grounding in Information Studies. This position also requires academic and professional advising of new and current students, other administrative support for the program, and to be active members of the School and College. We will begin screening applications immediately and the review process will continue until the positions are filled. Appointment is expected for January 2013 (Spring 2013 semester), and salary is negotiable.

The following are the required and preferred qualifications of potential candidates:

Required:

  • Evidence that the doctorate degree will be completed by the appointment date in Information Studies or a closely-related field.
  • Evidence of undergraduate/graduate teaching experiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to make extensive use of innovative distance learning technologies to support their teaching.
  • Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited Library and Information Science program

Preferred:

  • Evidence of exceptional teaching experiences both online and in-class environments.
  • Evidence that they are able to advise undergraduate students, as well as help in the overall administration of the program (course scheduling, curriculum development, marketing, etc.)
