Interim Dean Wooseob Jeong and Senior Lecture Bonnie Withers will be presenting their paper, “Translation Issues in Building a Multicultural Children’s Digital Library in Korea” at the IFLA preconference on August 10th. The paper will be presented during the “Boundaries Between Languages” session in Block 5 at 11:15 AM. The paper examines challenges in translating Korean children’s books into five languages. Professor Hope Olson and PhD student Jeannette Glover will have their paper, “Cataloguing and Classification Education and Training in Library and Information Science/Studies in South Africa, Brazil and the USA”, presented by co-author Dennis Ocholla. Other co-authors of the paper include Lyudmila Ocholla and José Augusto Guimarães. The presentation will take place on August 13 in Session 105 from 1:45-6:00PM in Session Room 2. Glover and Professor Olson will be on hand to answer questions and participate in the discussion. Phd students Renee Kapusniak and Jennifer Thiele will be presenting their poster, “Browsing for Leisure Reading in the Digital Environment: A Case Study”, on August 13 and August 14 from 12:00-2:00pm. Assistant Professor Jessica Moyer also contributed to the poster.
Adjunct Instructor Peter Lor will be presenting "Past, present and future: The IFLA-UNESCO partnership for development, democracy and diversity" on August 13 in Session 96 from 11:00am-12:45pm in Session Room 5. He will also present "Towards Excellence in International and Comparative Research in Library and Information Science" on August 13 in Session 105 from 1:45-6:00pm in Session Room 2. Professor Lor will also be presenting his poster "How LIS ideas travel internationally to make libraries inspiring, surprising, empowering.”

SOIS Receives Grant
Seed Funding for New and Refreshed Online Programs
SOIS was awarded a $40,000 grant from UW-Milwaukee’s Department of Academic Affairs. The Seed Funding for New and Refreshed Online Programs Grant will enable SOIS to update three existing courses and to develop and launch five new courses into the online environment, including a new post-graduate concentration area in Information Technology. This concentration would be the first offered by any school in the LIS field and it will be available entirely online.
SOIS IOrg Book Published
The Information Organization Research Group (IOrg) group completed an anthology on the epistemology of information organization titled Cultural Frames of Knowledge. The book was co-edited by SOIS Visiting Professor Dr. Richard Smiraglia and Associate Professor Hur-Li Lee. It’s published by Ergon Verlag of Germany, and includes eight chapters written by nine authors, five of whom are IOrg members: Smiraglia, Lee, Melodie Fox (PhD student), Professor Hope Olson, and Lei Zhang (postdoctoral fellow). The other four authors are international: two from India (Neelameghan and Raghavan), one from Spain (Martínez-Ávila), and the last originally from Israel (Friedman). As the editors wrote in the conclusion, this project’s “first motivation is to turn a high beam on epistemic issues in knowledge organization followed by an intention to marshal a sample of intellectual resources that represent a wider range of cultures for consideration” (p. 153). In other words, it is intended to broaden and diversify the discourse in hopes to stimulate further scholarly conversations.

National Taiwan Normal University Partnership
On August 8, a group of interns from the National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU) will present “E-service in Taiwan academic and public library” at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Golda Meir Library. The presentation introduces the current e-services available in academic and public Taiwanese libraries. The presentation will cover the definition of e-services, the current e-services in libraries, the challenges and opportunities, and directions for future development. The interns are being hosted by SOIS and the Golda Meir Library. This is an ongoing exchange with NTNU; SOIS and the Golda Meir Library have hosted students over the past few summers.
