I can describe the food and the people and the weather; I cannot do enough justice with description to explain what it is like to watch tears roll down the cheeks of a former
child soldier who is crying not because of lost time in the bush, or over his years spent struggling to get an education, but because he is lonely; he is finally about to earn his degree, but the
war took all of the people he would have like to have shared his success with.

Rewarding Community-Engaged Scholarship: a Request from
The Community-Engaged Scholarship Partnership in Canada
Increasingly, universities are addressing complex local, regional, and global issues by engaging with key stakeholders outside of the academy. For most
universities, however, the incentives and supports needed for faculty to engage in this way are not widely in place.
The Community-Engaged Scholarship Partnership in Canada is seeking examples of faculty reward and recognition language related to community engagement and community-engaged
scholarship (CES). This might be found in tenure and promotion criteria, annual performance review criteria, collective agreement provisions and departmental and faculty-level policies. The group will be compiling examples of supportive language to share with
colleagues at other universities. Please contact Ijeoma Madueke, Research Assistant, CES Partnership Faculty Assessment Workgroup, at

FUNDING
5.
NEA Funding for Research on How Art Works
The NEA will make awards to support research on how "art works." Consistent with its strategic plan, the NEA distinguishes between research projects seeking
to define value for the U.S. arts sector, and those seeking to demonstrate the arts' impact on American life. "Value"-oriented research will measure or otherwise clarify one or more components of how Americans participate in the arts. Such research
also may probe the underlying conditions and vehicles for arts participation; for instance, it can examine how key inputs such as training, education, and infrastructure, directly affect arts creation, arts audiences, or other aspects of arts engagement.
Deadline: November 6, 2012

HRSA: R40 Maternal and Child Health Research Program (MCHR)
This program supports applied research relating to maternal and child health services including services for children with special health care needs, which show promise of substantial contribution to advancement of the current knowledge
pool, and when used in States and communities should result in health and health services improvements. Findings supported by the MCH Research Program are expected to have potential for application in health care delivery programs for mothers and children. Research
proposals should address critical MCH questions such as public health systems and infrastructure, health disparities, quality of care, and promoting the health of MCH populations, which also support the goals of the Health Resources and Services Administration.

Inventory of Tools to Assess Capacity, Support, and Outcomes of Community Engagement
This inventory is designed as a resource for those interested in assessing university capacity, support, and outcomes for community
engagement and community-engaged scholarship (CE/CES). Developed through a search of primarily quantitative assessment tools identified within the grey literature and peer-reviewed articles, this inventory should be treated as a starting point for discussion.
Community Engagement involves collaborating with other people – and make no mistake,
collaboration is extraordinarily difficult. It is also extraordinarily beautiful and even funny sometimes.

Effective Community Engagement with “Flipped” Strategic Planning
The Nanaimo Ladysmith school district chose to adopt a type of flipped strategic planning, an “inquiry model approach”
in which engagement with their community became their vehicle for school and district planning. This approach allowed the district to get its community involved and contributing in meaningful ways, while also allowing the community to jointly approve and monitor
the plan’s effectiveness.

Civic Engagement Linked to Urban Planning
(Vancouver Sun, June 25, 2012)
There is a strong relationship between the way neighborhoods, town and cities have been planned, designed and developed over the last five or six decades and an associated
decline in civic engagement in those communities. The Vancouver Foundation recently published the results of a survey that begins to delve into what prevents people from being more connected with their fellow citizens and neighborhoods.
