****
The Kellogg Commission generated seven, broadly-accepted characteristics of effective public engagement, which include: (1) being responsive to community concerns; (2) involving community partners in co-creative approaches to problem solving (3) maintaining neutrality in order to serve a mediating role when there are divergent community views; (4) integrating engagement with the institution's teaching, research and service missions; (5) aligning engagement throughout the university, and (6&7) working with community partners to jointly coordinate and seek funding for community projects.
