Chemistry Librarian

Position Summary
Reporting to the Coordinator for Science Collections, this librarian is the liaison to the Department of Chemistry in the College of Natural Sciences. Manages collection development in this subject area, provides the full range of public services, including chemical structure searching, and serves as backup to the Engineering Librarian. Liaison duties include contact with faculty and students, reference, library instruction, and creation of subject-related research guides and web pages. We are seeking candidates with the technical acumen and interest to grow digital collections, and to potentially participate on teams to prepare datasets for text mining, data visualization and secondary analysis. The successful candidate will also participate approximately quarter-time in a secondary assignment based on the needs of the library and interests and qualifications of the librarian. This Librarian participates in professional development activities and scholarly activities, and serves on library and university committees as elected or assigned; other appropriate duties as assigned.
Librarians are appointed as regular faculty in the continuous appointment system and participate in professional development and scholarly activities related to their position in addition to serving on library and university committees as elected or assigned. Other appropriate duties as assigned.

Michigan State University Libraries serve more than 4,900 faculty, 36,000 undergraduates and 11,000 graduate and professional students on a park-like campus of over 5,000 acres.  The Main Library and 5 branch libraries have combined holdings of over 5 million volumes. East Lansing is a community of approximately 50,000 located adjacent to Lansing, the state capital.

Minimum Qualifications
Master's degree from an ALA-accredited program; excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills; ability to be flexible in a dynamic and changing environment; ability to work effectively with diverse faculty, students, and staff; ability to work independently and collaboratively; ability to prioritize and balance various unit needs; attention to detail; preparation and commitment to conduct independent scholarship consistent with a librarian appointment; capacity and commitment to engage independently in continuing professional development.

Desired Qualifications
Educational background in chemistry or related field or experience serving a chemistry-related population.  Experience with chemical structure searching.
