________________________________

The UTK 2012 Summer Teaching Institute (June 4-22) was a huge success! The Institute was facilitated by the OIT Instructional Services and the TENN TLC and sponsored by the Provost office. The Institute aims to support the University’s Top 25 objectives of improving student learning and increasing access to courses through alternative modes of instruction.

Thirty-two faculty members and graduate teaching assistants participated in this engaging faculty development program, while designing and developing exemplary courses enhanced with technology utilizing one of three methodologies: flipped (online lectures and active learning in the classroom), blended (combination of face-to-face and online student learning with considerably reduced seat time in the classroom), and fully online. For more information, visit the Summer Teaching Institute<https://oit.utk.edu/instructional/development/Pages/Summer_Institute_Schedule_2012.aspx> website!

________________________________

This summer, researchers using the Newton HPC Program's Linux compute cluster will get a pair of powerful upgrades. A new cluster of 24 GPGPU compute nodes will be installed in the next few months. The cluster will feature 384 cores of the newest Intel CPUs and 768 GB of RAM total, but the biggest features of this new resource are the 24 Tesla GPGPU compute cards that will be available. Each Tesla card will provide 512 CUDA parallel processing cores with a cumulative peak performance of 665 GFlops. The cluster compute nodes will be connected with a 40 Gbit/sec Infiniband network which will allow scientific compute jobs to use multi-machine, multi-core, and GPU computing techniques simultaneously.

A separate project will upgrade all existing Newton Program clusters from a 1Gbit/sec Ethernet core network to a redundant 10Gbit/sec core. This will increase the reliability and future scalability of the main Newton clusters network while providing higher bandwidth to parallel storage systems and to the UTK network core. Both upgrades are expected to be completed by the end of the summer. For more information about the Newton HPC Program, visit https://newton.utk.edu/.

________________________________

Dr. Lisa Fall, Associate Professor, School of Advertising and Public Relations, says she had a “very fruitful and educational adventure” as the Office of Information Technology’s (OIT) 2011-2012 Faculty Fellow and she’s been busy sharing her experience. Throughout the year, she worked on various projects that she says “have benefited not only me – but my students, the School of Advertising & Public Relations, the College of Communication & Information and the UT community as well."

Dr. Fall’s accomplishments include launching a state-wide market feasibility survey and examining attitudes and interests toward potentially launching an online master’s degree in Strategic Communication. She also worked on a presentation From Brick to Black: Moving Your Course Online, which provides a brief overview for faculty of how Blackboard serves as a viable platform for moving one’s class from face-to-face to online. In addition, she learned of OIT’s many training workshops and educational programs and suggested strategies for further promoting these services. Finally, two of her PR students assisted OIT in the creation of an upcoming promotional video! LabVIEW, developed by National Instruments, is a graphical programming environment used primarily by scientists and engineers for instrument control and data acquisition. There are no new product features in this service pack release; instead, it provides bug fixes and improved stability for LabVIEW 2011. To learn about the release details and the new features that were introduced in LabVIEW 2011, visit http://www.ni.com/labview/whatsnew.

Beginning with this release, LabVIEW users of the Windows 32-bit and 64-bit versions will download LabVIEW, the add-on modules and toolkits directly from the NI web page at http://www.ni.com or departments can order media sets from the UT Bookstore Technology Center. Before downloading and installing the software, you must create an NI login profile account. For information on creating a profile account, downloading LabVIEW products, and purchasing DVDs, download the LabVIEW installation instructions from the OIT download site accessible from http://oit.utk.edu/software.
