Hi folks,

As Erik mentioned, there are currently no plans in the offing to provide building schematics or indoor mapping of university buildings via Google Maps. The Google Mappers currently on campus are only mapping streets and pedestrian walkways.

Again, see http://www.google.com/help/maps/streetview/gallery.html#university-campuses for an example. What these university galleries provide is a sort of outdoor "virtual campus tour" whereby prospective students (in particular) and visitors can get a feel for the campus.

Best,
Leigh

Re: [CAMPCOMM] Campus mapping.
Hello,

Deb Haines beat me to it, but I, too, have concerns about security as re: building schematics. If I am missing something, please elaborate, if possible.

Eric

All the best,
Deb

(Tried to send this yesterday but don't think it went through)

Hi all,

Here are some answers.

>> 2) What's the status of web-accessible geo-system information describing the campus? I don't want to recollect GPS data for buildings and/or rooms if it's already done.

Take a look at http://communications.utk.edu/resources/web/map/. In addition to instructions about creating your own custom Google Map, we have also posted the raw data including GPS coordinates for buildings that we used to create the Google Campus map.

>> 3) I saw the Google Earth car on the strip today and have heard that they're in town working on a google campus project of some sort. Could someone elaborate?

Google is indeed in town and mapping the campus as part of their Campus View program. See http://www.google.com/help/maps/streetview/gallery.html#university-campuses for an example. But don't get too excited. It takes 4-6 months from the time they take the images until everything is processed and posted.

>> 4) It would be a real disappointment to have that facility around and not get indoor mappings of public buildings on campus at the same time.

At this time, Google will not be mapping the interior of buildings.

>>5) And if anyone is into this, what effects will the divorce of Apple IOS and Google Maps have on mobile web use at UTK?

Not sure, yet.

Erik

So, we're working on a mobile emphasis for our new college and related web sites. One of the big wins for going that way should be provision of location aware pages and functions. Now I have a couple of questions I'd like you to consider at week's end:

1) Is anyone around here using some good ideas we could steal (I mean borrow.) I envision a student

2) What's the status of web-accessible geo-system information describing the campus? I don't want to recollect GPS data for buildings and/or rooms if it's already done.

3) I saw the Google Earth car on the strip today and have heard that they're in town working on a google campus project of some sort. Could someone elaborate?

4) It would be a real disappointment to have that facility around and not get indoor mappings of public buildings on campus at the same time. I spend a good portion of the first couple of weeks every semester directing people inside the maze that is CUEB/SSB/AHT. (OK, that was more of an editorial comment than a question. If you're a stickler make it part of Q3.)

5) And if anyone is into this, what effects will the divorce of Apple IOS and Google Maps have on mobile web use at UTK?

Thanks for any discussion.

John
