UT to showcase undergrad researchers from across country

Undergraduates from colleges and universities all over the country will join a few area high school students to present their original research in a poster symposium this Friday, July 20, in the Baker Center’s Toyota Auditorium from 10 a.m.- 12:00 Noon.  The UT community and members of the public are warmly invited.

Three UT research centers are partnering in a shared UT STEM Symposium for their Research Experience for Undergraduate (REU) programs. 35 students from CURENT, NIMBioS, and TN-SCORE  will be featured in a showcase of great undergraduate research happening on campus this summer in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).  Presentation topics range from the development of natural pesticides to the use of modeling to better understand the rapid mutation of the AIDS virus.

UT symposium partners:

·         The Center for Ultra-Wide Area Resilient Electric Energy Transmission Networks (CURENT) conducts research to create greater efficiency, higher reliability, and lower costs for the nation’s electric power transmission system. The center, which is funded by the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Energy, also provides educational opportunities to a new generation of pre-college and university students who are interested in engineering.

·         The National Institute for Mathematical and Biological Synthesis (NIMBioS) brings together researchers from around the world to collaborate across disciplinary boundaries to investigate solutions to basic and applied problems in the life sciences. NIMBioS is sponsored by the National Science Foundation, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture with additional support from The University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

·         Tennessee EPSCoR (TN-SCORE)  is Tennessee’s first National Science Foundation RII Track 1 Research Infrastructure award. It provides a unique opportunity to develop a platform for enhanced research capacity and greater competitiveness within the diverse academic institutions across the state. The mission of TN-SCORE is to create a sustainable culture of collaboration between academe, government, and the private sector in energy science research, training, education and economic development that will lead to transformational changes in Tennessee.
