Introduction: The Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary announces an opening for Head of Acquisitions (HA) to begin on August 1, 2012 or as arranged.  Founded in 1957 as a graduate theological school owned by the Southern Baptist Convention, Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and Midwestern Baptist College, SBC, seeks applications and nominations for a Head of Acquisitions librarian beginning August 1, 2012 or when filled.  Its collection includes 200,000 volumes and its staff supports vigorous programs of collection development and participation in library instruction.   MBTS/MBC is located in suburban Kansas City, Missouri.  Degrees offered include: Associate, Bachelor's, Master's, PhD, and D.Min./D.Ed.Min.
Position Summary:  The Head of Acquisitions librarian manages, plans, and supervises all acquisitions operations by coordinating the procurement and receipt of library materials (print and digital) and reports directly to the Library Director.
Responsibilities:  The Head of Acquisitions (HA) librarian manages, plans, and supervises all acquisitions operations by coordinating the procurement and receipt of library materials (print and digital) and reports directly to the Library Director. HA manages library operations in the absence of the Director. Reviews and approves recommendations by library staff and/or revisions to library policies or programs; submits recommendations to the Director for final approval. HA participates in formulating policies on: service programs, publicity and public relations. HA participates in conducting staff conferences regarding library policies, procedures and techniques. The acquisitions librarian is expected to provide leadership for the formulation of policies and procedures related to ordering and receiving of materials for the seminary/college, ensuring that they follow audit requirements and maximize productivity;  to supervise and manage all routine activities in the daily operation of the acquisitions; to manage and expend the acquisitions budget and produce financial reports from the ILS that clearly track monies allocated, encumbered and expended for different types of collections and subject areas; to supervise and manage all activities in ordering and receiving new materials via firm order and/or standing order plans in a consortial purchasing environment; and to collaborate with the faculty in developing the collections.  Duties also include supervising student employees for the circulation desk, stack maintenance, and coordinating the assignments and responsibilities with the Library director; computer maintenance and upkeep, and coordinating with Information Technology Services staff on electronic resource implementation and support. HA performs other duties as assigned or as the situation dictates within the scope of this classification.
Qualifications:  The Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary (MBTS) Library employs four full-time librarians and six student employees.  MBTS seeks employees who are active evangelical Christians dedicated to assisting students in developing intellectual integrity, academic excellence, and Christian character as they prepare for vocational Christian ministry.  Required - ALA -accredited MLS or MLIS degree; entry level position requiring no experience but willingness to embrace the challenge and readiness to learn theological library collections, vendors and material budgets in an academic library; entry -level knowledge of cataloging practices and standards, including MARC records management.  MBTS Library is a member of the MOBIUS state-wide academic library consortium using Innovative Interfaces Inc. integrated library system. The successful candidate must be capable of lifting boxes of books and assisting with moving library furnishings as anticipated with future library expansion plans.
Salary & Benefits:  This is an appointed academic support staff position reporting to the Library Director.  Salary range is $35-$39,000 with a comprehensive benefits plan, depending upon qualifications and experience (not required for application).  Employees may pursue an additional degree(s) at MBTS/MBC including tuition-remission (degree program admission required).
