ARBORETUM SOCIETY TO HOLD URBAN FORESTRY PROGRAM JUNE 21
Oak Ridge, TN, June 9, 2012 -- The University of Tennessee Arboretum Society will sponsor a discussion on the UT Urban Forestry Program on Thursday,
June 21st at Roane State in Oak Ridge, 7:00 p.m.
The program will be presented by Dr. Sharon Jean-Philippe, an Assistant Professor of Urban Forestry in the Department of Forestry, Wildlife and Fisheries, and member of the Tennessee Urban Forestry Council.
Dr. Jean-Phillipe will be speaking about the urban forestry opportunities and apotential Oak Ridge urban tree survey.
Sharonreceived a B.S. in biology from Tennessee State University in 2002. She earned her M.S. in Botany and PhD. in Natural Resources from the University of Tennessee in 2005 and 2010. Her
M.S.
research focused on medical properties of edible fungi in the genus Pleurotus. Her dissertation
research evaluated the effects of mercury contaminated on tree diversity, endomycorrhizal and
ectomycorrhizal presence and absence and soil nutrient composition in Anderson and Roane Co.
Tennessee.
Dr. Jean-Phillipe’s research interests includes biogeochemical cycling of elements, carbon sequestration, and microbial community dynamics in Tennessee urban forest soils.
She is also interested in street
tree health and will be conducting a street and park tree inventory for the City of OakRidge.
