SLAIS Earns Inaugural Award from ARMA International Educational Foundation
 
The School of Library, Archival and Information Studies, The iSchool at The University of British Columbia, is proud to announce the Master of Archival Studies program at SLAIS has been awarded the inaugural Award for Academic Excellence in Records and Information Management Education by the ARMA International Educational Foundation. The award was presented to Dr. Luciana Duranti, chair of the MAS program, at the ARMA Canada 28th annual Conference held this week in Nanaimo B.C.
 
Helena Høyrup Named Dodson Visiting Professor
 
We are pleased to announce that Helene Høyrup, Ph.D., of the Royal School of Library and Information Science in Denmark, will be joining us as the inaugural Dodson Visiting Professor. An international scholar in children's literature studies, she will be at the iSchool January to April 2013. Named in honour of Suzanne and Earl Dodson, the Dodson Visiting Professorship provides funds to enable the successful candidate to spend a term engaged in teaching and research at the iSchool and with the UBC community.

The iSchool is welcoming two international scholars as guests over the summer, Professor William Wong of Middlesex University’s Interactive Design Centre, and Nassim Jafarinaimi of Georgia Tech’s Digital Media program.
 
During his visit Professor Wong will continue a programme of research with Dr. Victoria Lemieux of SLAIS on visual analytics for financial systemic risk analysis.  Dr. Wong will also give a number of talks on campus, including master’s and doctoral students at the iSchool and at UBC’s Media and Graphics Interdisciplinary Centre, and at the Peter Wall Institute, which is funding his visit to work with Dr. Lemieux.
 
Dr. Jafarinaimi is a research associate in the Digital Media Program at Georgia Tech where she has also been teaching as a visiting faculty for the past four years. During her visit, she will be meeting with faculty and students at the iSchool, discussing her research work into how the material and formal qualities of digital media shape individual and social experiences with the aim of understanding their ethical and political foundations/implications. Dr. Jafarinaimi’s educational and research background is in interaction design, media studies, and engineering. She received her PhD in Design from Carnegie Mellon University in 2011.
