Research
Support - Scantron Services
OIT owns a Scantron optical mark reader for use in exam scoring and data acquisition. Forms to be scanned should be dropped off at Digital Media Services, 204 Hodges Library between
9 am and 5 pm. The cost is six cents per sheet and is charged to a departmental account. Results will be sent by email within one working day.
Standard results for exam scans include an excel file containing student names, ids, and total number of items correct. The same information is also provided in a printable PDF file along with simple item analysis information (number and percent of students
choosing each response alternative, item total correlation) and overall test statistics (mean, median, mode, standard deviation, split half reliability, overall difficulty level).
Standard results for surveys or other data acquisition projects consist of an ASCII and/or excel file of the raw item responses. Custom programming and report generation for program evaluation or other on-going data acquisition projects are available for an
additional charge. Additional reports showing responses to each individual test item are available in PDF format for an additional $3 per batch. During spring semester 2012 OIT processed 862 batches of Scantron forms for a total of 57,902 sheets.

Orientation
and Clicker Technology
UTK's summer orientation sessions help students become familiar with the campus, receive academic advising and class schedules, and even purchase textbooks prior to the start of
the fall semester. This summer,
clicker technology is being used in several sessions to gather input and data from over 2000 students. Clicker technology uses a receiver and response device to gather input from students. The responses give faculty and students immediate feedback on the
understanding of the course material. Thus, students are getting a hands-on opportunity to use the response devices and system that will be used in many of their freshmen classes.
