Please see Dr. Yumi Une’s inquiry below, and respond to her directly if you have information. She believes that recent outbreaks of ranavirus in Japan may be a result of imported,
captive Dendrobatids from the Netherlands. For those in the Netherlands or Europe, can you send the known cases of ranavirus infection or disease in the Netherlands to Dr. Une? Has ranavirus been documented in captive dendrobatids in Europe? I am aware
of one published case of ranaviral disease in a captive dendrobatid (Miller et al. 2008) but it was not from Europe.

There is no wild Dendrobatidae in Japan.
I think that source of infection is the imported Dendrobatidae from Netherlands.
Therefor, I think that ranavirus infection endemic in some Dendrobatidae’s breeding farms of Netherlands.
Dutch breeders
have recommended
the treatment of chytrid fungus
to Japanese breeders.

Dr. Une:
I am unaware of any cases of ranaviral disease in wild populations of Dendrobatidae. There is one published case in captivity
(see Miller et al. 2008: J Zoo Wildl Med 39:445-449).
Was the die-off in Japan in captive or wild frogs?
Ranavirus has been documented in the Netherlands (Kik et al. 2011: Vet. J. 190:284-286), but this case was not with dendrobatid frogs; the affected amphibians were Pelophylax spp
and Lissotriton vulgaris.

Now, in two areas in Japan, Rana virus infection of Dendrobateshas been epidemic . Many frogs have died.
These two episodes, from Dendrobates were imported from the Netherlands, has begun. In the Netherlands, something has happened.
Please let me know if you have the information.
